Sunshine & Lattes!

Caramel Latte!
See yourself here!
I believe that there has been a collective sigh of relief heard throughout much of Garrett County this past week as the last snow storm basically missed us. We here in the mountains scoff at anything under 6 inches so the last snowfall had very little impact but did add fresh powder to Wisp’s ski slopes. Today the sun is a bright surreal blue and with the temperatures climbing into the 30’s, it feels like a wonderful heat wave. If you are looking for a last minute getaway, now is the best time to call as we are running some fabulous discounts here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations. Give us a call and we happily assist you in finding a home for you and your guests (1-866-351-1119 or online

When the temperatures drop, it’s always good to have a backup plan of ways to stay warm. Mine now has formed into an addiction of caramel lattes from Trader’s Coffee House located here at the lake. Although I’m not actually recommending that caffeine be your fix, I do highly suggest that you stop by and see Brenda and her crew. A very warm and comfy vibe is felt from the minute you step inside and the smell of fresh baked goods is mouthwatering! They have a toasty fireplace which would the perfect place for reading your morning paper while you sip your coffee. They also offer free wireless internet so for those that need to stay connected, they can do so while stuffing their face full of one her yummy muffins or scones. She also serves a variety of other breakfast and lunch items that are definitely worth trying. Don’t know the difference between a latte or a frappe or undecided on which to choose? Ask Brenda’s staff. They are definitely top notch when it comes to customer service and go above and beyond to help.
The view from my window is shouting “sunshine & fresh mountain air” and there is a caramel latte waiting. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake.

A Birthday Wish with a side of Yum!

So I would like to start this little ditty off with a huge heartfelt “Happy Birthday” shout out to our favorite boss lady, Jodi, who celebrated her special day on the 15th! Happy Birthday Jodi ~ we hope your day was amazing! Seeing this as the perfect opportunity to brown-nose a wee bit, I decided to treat her to her favorite chai tea from Trader’s Coffee House (and maybe help myself to something sweet and frothy in the process)! There is something so invigorating about the smell of fresh ground coffee and one is not disappointed when they step through the door at Trader’s! Immediately engulfed in the wonderful delicious aroma of espresso and fresh baked goods, it is apparent why this is a favorite meeting place for locals and visitors to our area. Hungry? No problem as they offer both breakfast and lunch items as well as a wide variety of pastries, cookies, and quiches. All made fresh daily! Frappe, Cappuccino, Smoothie, Chai tea? So many choices and once you narrow that down, you still need to pick a flavor from the abundance to choose from! Need to do some work, update your facebook status, or just need Wireless Internet in general? Trader’s has this as well! The ambience oozes a casual and laid back vibe, perfect for hanging out while you enjoy a nice hot beverage. It suddenly “Dawned” on us….

Dawn & her hubby!

Pride & dedication are 2 words that automatically come to mind when I think of our featured employee of the month for January, our very own Mrs. Dawn Kight! Now, one may think that my opinion is slightly askew as I happen to think that Dawn is possibly one of the sweetest and kindest ladies I know. This makes me proud to call her my friend. Her strong work ethic and her willingness to always step in and offer a helping hand makes me proud to call her my coworker. Dawn started working with Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacationstheir first winter in 2008.  She began in housekeeping where she often received positive compliments on her stellar work and attention to detail. In July 2012, she made the move into our Laundry Department. So, essentially she is to thank for all of those crisp clean towels and linens that are provided for guests to use throughout their stay. Dawn resides in Mountain Lake Park with her husband. In her spare time (of which she says there is very little of) she enjoys crocheting and getting inked (she is a fan of the tattoos and wears them well). Due to our many various company cook offs, I also know that she is a very talented chef as well. Dawn also has a daughter, Amy, of whom she is immensely proud. Amy is following her mother’s footsteps and is following her dream to become a registered nurse. (Dawn was a nurse for many, many years and glows when she speaks of Amy pursing this passion). So, this month we give a big shout out to Dawn. We are so lucky to have you as part of our team!

What’s brewing?

Now that summer is officially here, it’s a great time to head into Oakland, our county seat.  Mountain Fresh Producers Association has once again started the Farmers Market located downtown on Wednesdays & Saturdays form 10 am until 1pm from now until the end of October. Help support the future of agriculture in our area while enjoying a wide variety of fresh veggies and fruit. There are also a bevy of other treats to choose from including jams & jellies, baked goods, crafts, plants and herbs. Definitely well worth the short drive.
While in downtown, you may find yourself being lured into the new shop, Brewed Awakenings Coffeehouse, by the intoxicating smell of coffee and cappuccino. I recently had the pleasure of taking a writing workshop that was held in the coffee shop a few nights a week. There is something so satisfying about the smell of coffee and fresh baked goods! They offer a large selection of muffins, cookies, bagels, and more. The shop is also charming in décor giving a carefree but spirited vibe. Stop by and say “Hello” to Karen, the shop’s proprietor the next time you are in Oakland.

There is still time left to reserve a home for your Fourth of July celebration here @ Deep Creek Lake. We have opened up all of our homes to allow for partial week stays. Time to Espresso Yourself!

After a busy day at the office, I decided to go for a little pick me up with a refreshing beverage from Trader’s Coffee House. So many beverages to choose from! Knowing full well that my coworkers have little patience with me when I am java-ed up, I decided to try a strawberry fruit smoothie instead. Delish! Made with real strawberries and topped with whipped cream and sprinkles, it was the perfect jolt that I needed! It had been awhile since I had been in Trader’s which is surprising because I love the atmosphere there! It’s very casual but warm and inviting and their menu just continues to grow. They now serve a variety of breakfast foods such as waffles, scones, breakfast sandwiches, and more. For lunch you can choose salad, Paninis, quiche, and the list continues. All are made daily and with nothing but fresh ingredients. Not sure what to get? Ask. The employees are quick to offer suggestions and always offer exceptional customer service. Need to surf the web? No problem as the coffee house offers wireless internet. The coffee shop is also accessible by boat so stop by next time you are out cruising on the water. So, if you are looking for a comfortable place to hang out while enjoying a specialty drink and snack, then I highly recommend that you check out Brenda and her crew at Trader’s. You will be glad that you did!

Trader’s Coffee House

I have been meaning to tell you about my favorite Chai Tea location in Deep Creek Lake. A must stop is Trader’s Coffee House, right below Brenda’s Pizzeria and next door to High Mtn Sports. I go there at least 3 times a week to get my morning large Chai Tea with vanilla and skim milk – which I must say beats out the bigger franchises! They also have delicious home made muffins, pastries, and many other delightful treats. They have seasonal drinks as well (which I need to try if I can forgo my Chai Tea for one day!). They even serve lunches! They have cute knick knacks to shop for and FREE wi fi as well.

Check out this wonderful shop next time you are in Deep Creek Lake!
