Deep Creek Lake Area Fishing – A Favorite Spring Activity

During the spring months, Deep Creek Lake area fishing opportunities abound!

Fishing is as much about the catch as it is about experiencing the outdoors. Garrett County’s miles of cold mountain rivers, lakes and streams have made it a favorite fishing destination. You can take a boat out on the lake, wade into a fast flowing stream or head to one of the area’s many state parks that offer fishing.

With 3,900 acres to explore, Deep Creek Lake supports a wide variety of desirable game fish. It is best known for its large and smallmouth bass fishery. Other common species include: walleye, brown and rainbow trout, chain pickerel, northern pike and yellow perch.

Anglers Welcome!

Our mountain area is finally beginning to bloom! After being covered in white for the long winter season, the sight of buds on the trees and the grass growing green and plush is rather exciting. I even got giddy over watching some ducks playing in a quiet cove last week. Spring in Deep Creek is one of my favorite times as you almost feel like you just woke up from a nice, rested nap. Anglers are beginning to visit now that docks are going in the water and to take advantage of the quiet stillness of the lake during the Spring season. Fishing is a popular activity on the lake at this time and a good time to go, particularly if you are looking for large and small mouth bass and walleyes. Many mornings on the  commute to work, you will catch sight of those that enjoy the quiet solitude of mornings spent on the lake. If you are planning a fishing getaway, make sure to give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online @ www.deepcreekvacations.com). We can not only help you find the perfect house for you and your party, we will search extensively to find the one has a dock slip or is located on the part of the lake that is known to be a superior fishing spot. One of our smaller homes, Cross the River, is a gorgeous little two bedroom home that is located right on the shores of the Youghiogheny River, also known as a great river to fish, particularly if you’re fan of trout. Imagine spending your mornings and afternoons casting from your very own dock or from the lake’s shores.
For those that have no interest in fishing, now is still a wonderful time to visit for a relaxing weekend in the mountains. Choose to spend the weekend trying out one of our numerous golf courses, go horseback riding at a local stable or head to Wisp for a ride on their mountain coaster. What’s a mountain coaster, you may ask? Basically it is a one to two person (depending on size; think adult and smaller child) coaster that winds down Wisp Mountain. You even control the speed so if you are a big wimp, like me, you can slow it down. The daredevils can go a full 28 miles per hour). It’s extremely fun and a neat thing that you can brag to your friends about! Currently many of our homes are offering 3 nights for the price of 2 through the month of May so take advantage and give us a call. A weekend in the mountains can do wonders! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

3 Cheers For Spring!

Checking out a snake!
Ahhh, the sporadic spring season we always seem to have in these beloved Maryland Mountains. I think that this is Mother Nature’s way of always keeping us on our toes. A little bit of snow today and 50° and bright sunshine the following day. Our guests certainly can’t complain as the Wisp Ski Resort is still open and there is still plenty of snow on the mountain. If you have the chance to escape this weekend, I recommend that you do!
The Taylor-Made crew just finished up an exciting week by hosting what is the start of several The Big 8 Seminar~ Tomorrow’s Ideas Today. Bringing together eight various companies involved in the vacation rental industry for 2 days of Boot Camp seminars that cover everything from customer service, housekeeping, maintenance, and more. We here at Taylor-Made are firm believers that the best thing we can do for our guests is to stay as educated and current on all things related to our industry. Having the opportunity to network and share ideas with some of the brightest and best in the business is a wonderful chance to do just that. That and it was a lot of fun.
If you really want to get into the feel of spring than April is a perfect month to take the family to The Deep Creek Discovery Center. Not only is there various events held there this month but anytime is a good time to go and learn about the natural wonders of our region. This interpretive environmental center allows children to see various types of birds of our region in The Aviary or view various wildlife such as snakes, reptiles, frogs, toads, and more. Hands on exhibits include touching old fossils and looking under a microscope to check out Deep Creek’s under water ecology. If you are visiting over Easter, take the kids there to see the Easter Bunny. Bring along six hardboiled eggs and let the kids learn how to dye the eggs using all natural ingredients. This event is held on April 19th from 10 am- 1 pm. It’s a great family event so if you’re in the area, check it out!

If you’re in need of a little R & R, now is a great time to visit Deep Creek. The lake is quickly thawing and before you know it you will be spotting the early morning fisherman enjoying the serenity of a Deep Creek morning. Spring is a great time to come and enjoy mountain hiking and biking as well since you get to witness the mountains reawakening. If that doesn’t convince you, it’s also a great time to take advantage of our out of season rates on your vacation home. As always, give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online @ www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us know what you are looking for in the perfect home and we will do our best to match your needs.

Nature Lovers Rejoice!

Tolliver Falls!
It’s hard to believe that we are already heading into the end of August. Labor is approaching very quickly and kids are getting ready to head back to school. Fall, my very favorite season, will be here before we know it. There is a lot of fun festivals going on in the area in the next few months so now is the perfect time to look into reserving a weekend getaway. Our Art & Wine Festival is coming up on the weekend of September 6thand Autumn Glory extends over the long weekend of October 10-13th. Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations is more than ready to help you find the ideal home for you and your family. Give us a call (1-866-351-1115 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com)!

Memories are made here!
Now, I realize that my opinion is completely biased but I think life in our mountains provides us with some of the most breathtaking scenery throughout the year. Aside from the natural beauty of Deep Creek and the surrounding lush mountains, we also have Swallow Falls State Park, which houses the largest waterfall in the state of Maryland. It’s highly recommended for nature lovers, especially those that enjoy mountain biking and hiking. Another phenomenal place that I like to recommend is one that is a little less known to the general public. Savage River Reservoir is a 360 acre reservoir that was formed by the Savage Dam which impounds the Savage River.  Located in a canyon, the reservoir is surrounded by a plush mountain landscape making it the perfect place for kayaking and canoeing. It is also well known as a sublime place for trout fishing. Add in the fact that you have soaring bald eagles flying high above you and you will be completely in awe. It is well worth to check it out. If you need our assistance, we can suggest an area vendor that does some amazing kayaking tours (www.allearthecotours.com). Labor Day is coming and homes are going quickly! Call today~ we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Are you hooked?

Spring weather has finally arrived, better late than never, here in the mountains. We have been graced with some awesome weather and temps in the comfortable 70’s. It’s a great time to get outside and get active. Swallow Falls State Park showcases Mother Nature at her finest and the largest waterfall in the state of Maryland but also offers fantastic hiking and mountain biking trails. Check it out on your next Deep Creek getaway!
Last month Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations was the humble recipient of a hosted lunch by Jearbryo’s Hookers Seafood & Grill. Yum! They served a variety of fresh made wraps and their famous crab dip served with fresh breadsticks! Such a wonderful treat and so greatly appreciated! If you haven’t been up by there in a while, I strongly recommend that you check it out as they offer a wide variety of seafood dishes and choices! Celebrating their 1 year Anniversary this week, they are ready for their guests to come and check out the newly added outside patio, ideal for dining out on a warm spring evening or a nice summer day! (Anyone else picturing fresh crabs and cold beer?) Check out their website (www.jearbryos.com)  for a complete menu listing and to see some of their great offers  (very reasonably priced lunch specials, discount for Seniors on Monday evenings, Double Dinner Deals, and more!) I also got a chance to speak to Bryon, the owner, who is also very busy these days branching out into the catering world. You may have also seen him and his crew out connecting with the community at numerous local events and festivals (Autumn Glory, Art & Wine Festival, Friendsville Days, Little Yough Music Festival, and the list goes on and on!) They usually set up their little booth/ wagon and offer some of their most requested items such as their amazing crab cakes! So, if you are looking for a fabulous meal (especially if you are a lover of seafood like my family) then head to Jearbryo’s for a relaxing dinner out.
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations is currently running some phenomenal discounts and deals (For an extended weekend getaway, ask about our “Stay 3 nights for the price of 2” special running through the 2nd week of May!).  Now is also a good time to book your summer vacation. Homes are going quickly so in order to get the perfect home for you and your family, call and speak to one of our Reservationist on what you are looking for in a vacation home. See you at the lake!

Still Snowing!

Husky Power Dogsledding!

Driving by our office here on Rt.219, our flashing sign suggests that you should “Think Snow!” Apparently, many people did, as we continue to have the wonderful fluffy stuff falling down. Wisp is still going strong as are other winter activities in our area. As I mentioned previously, snow- shoeing tours are an excellent family activity. Crede Calhoun from All Earth Eco Tours does these as well as cross country skiing. Definitely worth checking out. (www.allearthecotours.com or call them 1-800-446-7554) Another fun activity to check out is Husky Power dogsledding! (http://www.huskypowerdogsledding.com/  or call them 1-301-746-7200) Here you get the thrilling opportunity to be pulled by a team of Siberian huskies! You will get to visit the kennels and pet and play with the pups! Demonstrations are given on how the sleds work, how the huskies play, live, train and more. Best of all is the excitement of whisking through the trails while being led by the dog team. A Deep Creek must do!

Ice Fishing @ Deep Creek Lake!

Speaking of snow and winter, here are some fun facts about Garrett County:
v Did you know that we receive nearly double the snowfall of Fairbanks, Alaska?
v The average ice cover of the lake in mid-winter is 18 inches thick? (Ice fishing is also a very popular winter activity!)
v Speaking of fishing, did you know that there are 26 different fish species in Deep Creek Lake?
v The average winter temperature here is 29° F? (After a day of playing outside, it’s nice to come in and warm up in front of a crackling fireplace!
Heading into March, it’s still the perfect time to come and visit us here in the mountains. Things Worth Celebrating!

JOE!!!

Lots of exciting happenings going on at Taylor-Made these days.  Joe, of the owners of the company, recently returned from a Regional Seminar in the Outer Banks. Last Fall, Joewas elected to be on the board of Vacation Rental Housekeeping Professionals (www.vrhp.org) It is a National Non-Profit organization that focuses on maintenance and housekeeping issues. This can range anywhere from the best supplies and chemicals to use, to inspections, to ideas that will help our staff work in the most productive and effective way. Joe is a conference committee co-chair which is responsible for putting together the location of seminars and gives input into topics that are covered at these functions. Although he learned some very helpful information to help our staff continue to strive to bring the best service to our guests, we are happy to have him back. So, welcome home Joe!

Celebrations At The Lake!

On another exciting note, we are very pleased to add another 8 bedroom lakefront home to our rental market. Celebrations at the Lake is an exquisite home that is perfect for the multi-family getaway. This home has it all! Pool table, foosball table, hot tub, dock slip and a private indoor heated pool. (You have to check out the pictures as this pool room is so bright and cheerful!). It also boasts an elegant Great Room with a massive stone fireplace and an expansive kitchen with multiple appliances. So, if you are planning a family get together or a couple’s retreat, call for more details on this premiere vacation home. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Ice, Ice, Baby

So, as you are driving down Rt.219, traveling through Garrett County, you may catch a glimpse of some little tents sporadically spread across Deep Creek Lake. Garrett Countians, being the resourceful folk that they are, have found yet another way to turn Deep Creek Lake into recreational use. We call this ice fishing and it is a very popular wintertime activity here in the mountains. Why would one choose to sit out in the cold and fish? For the goods, that’s why. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, chain pickerel, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish can all be found, according to the State Park’s website. Because the ice generally does not get thicker than 8-10 inches, a hand held auger can be used to create your hole. Some local vendors in our area even rent out the necessary equipment needed. Many people find it a peaceful way to enjoy the fresh outside air and the tents, although not necessary, do help to block out the some of the wind. To learn more about this wintertime activity, click on the link below. Otherwise, we’ll see on the lake (literally…) . Please make sure you check with the local bait shops to see if and where it is safe to go out on the lake to ice fish.
