There has been whispers and rumors floating around that the S word is about to make an appearance. For our winter enthusiasts, this is greeted with smiles and lots of “Bring it on!” For those that are little less of a fan, they hate to see this warmer fall weather take absence! Regardless if it’s this weekend or later, snow will definitely be making an appearance. Now is the perfect time to enjoy a nice weekend getaway. Weather is still nice enough (snow or not) to take advantage of our many hiking trails throughout our state parks! Swallow Falls State Park will always impress but Deep Creek State Park also offers some amazing walking and mountain biking trails! Definitely worth checking out! We here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (www.deepcreekvacations.com or 1-866-351-1119) are still offering some phenomenal discounts including Stay 3 Nights for the Price of 2 now through December 20th. Plan a couple’s retreat or make it a family getaway, we are ready to help you find the perfect home for you!
If you happen to be visiting our area and looking for a special and unique dining experience, I would recommend checking out Cornish Manor Restaurant in Oakland. Standing immense it’s Victorian glory, it definitely makes a pretty first impression. Belated birthday celebrations took my teenage son and me there last week for lunch. Offering multiple dining areas, they were just busy enough to be comfortable but you still had your choice seating wise (if you are planning on dining during the weekend and/ or for dinner, I think that they may require reservations). Wraparound windows give you the opportunity to enjoy the outside sunlight or you can choose by the wall for more intimate conversations. They offer a large variety of choices for the lunch menu alone; choose seafood pasta, the quiche of the day, or their infamous warm chicken salad served in a bread bowl! Incredible! While the prices are slightly larger than your average Value Meal, the portions are huge and the flavor is divine! The 1860’s Victorian is elegantly decorated throughout and you can truly feel the homes captivating charm and history. Located in our county seat of Oakland, it’s a mere 15-20 minute ride from McHenry and the heart of Deep Creek Lake! Again, if you are looking for a new dining establishment while visiting, Cornish Manor is definitely worth the trip! To Snow or Not Snow? That is the question. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
I had the pleasure of taking a trip through the town of Accident the other day. Accident is a small town located north of Deep Creek Lake and is usually seen by visitors as “the small town they pass through to get to the lake”. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the town offers a great deal to both visitors and locals. Of course, the first statement that we always hear is about how the town has such a strange name. Was it ‘by accident’? As a matter of fact it was! Interesting history fact: A gentleman by the name of Mr.George Deakins was to receive 600 acres of land in Western Maryland as a debt from King George II of England. Mr. Deakins sent out 2 corps of engineers, each without knowledge of the other, to survey the best land in the area. Up return and to their great surprise, each one had marked the same property. Mr.Deakins named the land “The Accident Track”, hence now the town of Accident!
Our first stop and one I always make when traveling through the area is FireFly Farms Creamery and Market, where you can buy some of their award winning cheeses (made on site!). They also offer an abundance of wines, specialty jams, crackers, and spreads. They really do offer a huge selection and encourage you to try as many as the cheeses that you wish. We scored our goods and were on your way! I highly recommend that you check them out!
The history buffs in the group will enjoy visiting Drane House, significant for its unique architecture and seen as a window into early Pioneer Garrett County life. It is believed to be one of the oldest standing structures in Garrett County today. Visitors can call and schedule to take a tour of the home. If interested, contact the Accident Town Hall 301-746-6346.
Other visitors may enjoy visiting the town over the Fourth of Julywhere they hold an annual Fourth of July parade. Craft shows and various entertainment are located throughout the town on this day and it’s a superb way to spend a special family day celebrating our patronage.
Our last stop was Annie’s Kitchen Country Restaurant for some lunch! First timer for me and I am now hooked. I chose the 6 inch Italian Sub (thank goodness I didn’t go for the bigger sub as this was enormous!). I have to say it was possibly one of the best subs I have ever had! Made with all fresh ingredients, they use a lot of herbs in the seasoning which really gives it a boost in flavor! (I’m already plotting a return stop!) The restaurant itself is charmingly decorated with memorabilia from the family run establishment with lots of pictures and signs and such. It definitely has a warm and cozy ambience. With some subtle eavesdropping, I also found out that their breakfast (served all day) is amazing. Check it out the next time that you are coming to the lake or even on your way out of town! You will not regret it.

As we prepare to “Spring Ahead” with our clocks this weekend, we are still very much in winter mode with lots of snow on the ground and the Wisp is still open and going strong. We frequently get asked by visitors to our area to recommend some dining options for them during their stay. If they have children, we may suggest Smiley’s Fun Zone or if they are looking for a romantic candlelight dinner, I always tell them that they can’t go wrong with The Four Seasons @ Will O’ the Wisp. However, if they are just looking for something casual but a little different, I like to suggest that they check out Mountain State Brewery, located just a few minutes past Wisp Resort. Wooden floors with high vaulted ceilings provide a warm and cozy atmosphere. Actually the whole vibe is very relaxed and casual. If you are bringing the kids, there are numerous board games there to keep them occupied. Now, I have to be honest, I haven’t tried many of their dishes, simply because the first time we went, we tried the Fire on the Mountain pizza, and we were smitten. Cooked in a wood burning fireplace and using all fresh ingredients, makes the food delectable. They have a large variety of pizzas, wraps, burritos, salads and snacks. Of course, it’s not called a Brewery for nothing! Boasting a variety of different hand crafted ales, they differ from light to dark. Not sure which to pick? Choose their ale sampler and get one of each. Not being a big ale fan myself, I chose the Hillbilly Punch! Wow! Very good but definitely packs a bit of a punch (pardon the pun). Sometimes they offer acoustic music on the weekends which is definitely an added treat. Relaxed, casual atmosphere mixed with awesome food and beverage, makes Mountain State Brewery a must! Check it out the next time you are in the area. There are still a lot of fun activities going on around Deep Creek Lake in the next few weeks, so be sure to call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119) http://deepcreekvacations.com/ today to take advantage of some great last minute discounts. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
To most people, Wednesday’s simply mean hump day. The day that puts you further away from Monday and closer to the weekend. Here, at Deep Creek Lake, Wednesday’s actually signifies more than that. It signifies an evening of casual yet elegant ambience. A night to indulge with a large selection of delectable, gourmet cuisine . A night to create a feast to your specific desires without the painstaking work of actually preparing it. Yes, that’s right, folks. We are talking about Pasta Mania night at The Four Seasons Restaurant. If you have never dined at the Four Seasons, I strongly recommend that you check it out. The restaurant itself is fashioned in elegant décor with votive candles accenting the tables. Offering some of the finest lakefront dining in the area, guests can enjoy their meal while taking in the exquisite lake and mountain views. Their menu consists of everything from steak and seafood to yummy appetizers such as calamari and Thai scallops. On Pasta Mania night, they set up a large buffet style station where guests get to choose their own pasta meal. By choose, I mean they offer a variety of different noodles, sauces, and toppings (lots of fresh veggies included). Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations employees and employers ventured out for a night on the town last Wednesday to check out the selection and I must say, we have nothing but positive things to say. The food was absolutely divine; the customer service stellar, and a great time was had by all. In the meantime, slopes are open, the sun is shining, and it is a great time to call for some fabulous last minute deals on your perfect vacation home. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
