Youghiogheny River: Deep Creek Lake Area History

Throughout Garrett County’s history the Youghiogheny River has been a source of transportation, economic importance and recreation.

The Youghiogheny River was used by Native Americans with canoes for centuries, spending time along its banks for hunting expeditions, trade and even war. When white men appeared in the area, they adopted the canoe as a means of traversing the river.  The first written account of white men’s use of canoes on the Yough was made by a young George Washington.  On May 4th, 1754 he wrote:  Continue reading Youghiogheny River: Deep Creek Lake Area History

Deep Creek Lake Area Fishing – A Favorite Spring Activity

During the spring months, Deep Creek Lake area fishing opportunities abound!

Fishing is as much about the catch as it is about experiencing the outdoors. Garrett County’s miles of cold mountain rivers, lakes and streams have made it a favorite fishing destination. You can take a boat out on the lake, wade into a fast flowing stream or head to one of the area’s many state parks that offer fishing.

Shop Till You Drop @ Schoolhouse Earth!

As the sun continued to dance through the clouds, my need to escape the office and enjoy it become a possibility today when I had to make a stop at Schoolhouse Earth to pick up some flyers for our office. Enjoy the sun and get to go to one of my all-time favorite shops in our area? I love the perks of my job! Even pulling into the parking area, you can see that there is a large array of lawn ornaments on display outside. I am a true sucker for outdoor décor including flags, wind chimes, you name it! (And yes, even garden gnomes!) Here you will a large variety to choose from. With 3 separate buildings, it feels like a bit of a magical village! I head to the first building and I am lost in shopping heaven! So many jewelry choices! Big loud bold necklaces or dainty little birthstone chains, rings, earrings, something for everyone’s taste! Walking in further and here you will find a variety of beautiful scarves and purses! Completing this circle I find a wall of candles to choose from! It’s like finding all of my favorite things in this one little spot! I basically just walked in a daze throughout all of the buildings simply in awe over how many things I saw that I suddenly desperately felt that I needed and must have immediately! The building to the right was another delight! Here you could find an expansive collection whether you were looking for some home décor such as curtains or specialty dishes for your kitchen collection. Speaking of which, for those Foodies out there, they have an amazing collection of specialty dips, mustards, crackers, etc. Also for the wine lovers, they have a fun and unique array of wall plaques, wine glasses, wine glass accessories (these apparently are quite popular), and more! For the kids section, they have a great collection of games, puzzles, books, and toys to choose from! I try to think of myself as a grown up but I saw A lot of kid’s items that I was ready to rip open and play with! So many cool things to choose from!
Your fun continues to flow outside when you walk to the back area of the shops to see the little petting/feeding area. While they do have a few alpacas and a donkey on site, they chose to stay back and just do their own thing. I did however, get to witness Spencer, the Rooster as he strutted about. Charlie Brown the goat also came by to say Hi! Both seemed more concerned with the fresh watermelon rine they had been given just a few minutes prior to be completely honest but it was nice that they were willing to swagger by.
Schoolhouse Earth is not just an average stop that you come across, it’s an entire shopping experience. It’s the kind of specialty shop that you go to and are able to find that one perfect gift that you know will make your best friend’s day. It’s a neat place where the cashiers are pleasant and helpful and you just know that they really like their job. If you are lucky enough to meet Stephen, the owner, he will happily guide you around and help you find exactly what you are looking for! We always believe it is important to support our local shops but we also recommend Schoolhouse Earth because it truly is one of our favorite shops around Deep Creek Lake and we want you to experience the best while you are here!

Prepping for Deep Creek Lake Summer Vacations!

Everyday seems to be a new whirl of excitement around the Taylor-Made offices. We are enjoying some amazing spring weather lately with temperatures in the low to mid-70s. Bright blue skies and lots of sunshine, almost like something out of postcard. We are very lucky.
Each department has been gearing up and prepping for guests who will soon be arriving for their Deep Creek Lake summer vacations.
Reservation Specialists have been busy helping families plan their last minute summer vacations, from finding the perfect vacation home to planning activities to do while they are staying here at Deep Creek Lake. Luckily they are all very familiar with each home, the location, and the amenities each one has to offer. As we all like to “Play where we work”, they are also very knowledgeable about the various restaurants and activities to do in the area. Best place to get fresh produce in the area? Ask, we can tell you. Aunt Bessie likes quirky, off the wall shops? Yep, we know that one too! This is what makes our Reservationists so spectacular at their jobs!
Still speaking of busy, our lawn crews have been crazy doing spring clean ups! We love it when guests pull up to our vacation rental homes and say “Awww…it feels like home!” We want our homes to look manicured and inviting and that is why our lawn crew puts so much time and energy into each job. New mulch, cleaning up debris, fresh cut; just to name of few of the many tasks they take on daily! They are greatly appreciated for their hard work.

Our Owner Reps/ Inspectors may be taking on the toughest job of any right now as they are multi-tasking the many jobs that need to get done to prepare the home for summer rentals. Hours are spent pouring over kitchen items in order to make a full inventory of what is needed for the fully stocked kitchen! Carpet cleanings are being scheduled as well as window washing! Deep cleaning throughout the entire home including all comforters and other bedding. A lot of items to keep track of for each home! It’s because they know the homes inside and out that help them pull all of this together so efficiently.

As I mentioned, a whirl wind of activities going on here at our Taylor-Made home base these days. We kind of like this way. As always, we are offering some awesome last minute discounts for your spring getaway! Visit for 3 days and stay for the price of 2 for the remaining month of May. Give us a call (1-866-351-1119 or online

I Want Candy!!!

CANDY!
We still officially have 1 day to go until spring but Mother Nature has been very kind in providing us with some sunshine & warmer temperatures.  Life in the mountains can be very unpredictable so we know that we are in no-way out of snows way but for now, it feels wonderful. We are even starting to get notifications from the local golf courses of possible opening days. There are so many fun activities to do here in the spring.
Speaking of things to do, I recently took the afternoon off to check out some of our local shops. While I can go on and on about all of the great little shops here at Deep Creek Lake & the surrounding area, one my very favorite and one that I feel it is my duty to tell you about is Candyland/ Farmer’s Market in Oakland, our county seat. While many visitors coming to our area make a stop at our local Wal-Mart, many of them are unaware that just 2 minutes farther away is a store filled with hundreds of different kinds of candy which can be purchased already bagged or by the pound. A true plethora of sugary goodness! Starbursts, Swedish fish, Snickers, Laffy Taffy, chocolate covered everything! Allow yourself one day of totally indulge your sweet tooth! Who doesn’t love Candyland?

Fresh produce
Conveniently and as if they knew the guilt would hit you at some point, the other half of the store is the Farmer’s Market! Stocked full of fresh fruits and veggies, many of which are grown locally, a win-win all around! They also have specialty dips, jams, soups, and large bins filled with a variety of different nuts! You will also find a nice assortment of cheeses including a small selection of goat cheeses. A very uniquely divided store; gather as much candy and chocolate as possible on one side and stock up on your much needed fruits and veggies on the other side! You definitely want to stop here!
Have you planned your spring getaway yet? Spring in the mountains is a must! It’s just a nice and peaceful time to visit while still having a ton of choices for things to do whether you choose horseback riding, mountain biking or hiking, golf, fishing, or just simply want to get away!

Anglers Welcome!

Our mountain area is finally beginning to bloom! After being covered in white for the long winter season, the sight of buds on the trees and the grass growing green and plush is rather exciting. I even got giddy over watching some ducks playing in a quiet cove last week. Spring in Deep Creek is one of my favorite times as you almost feel like you just woke up from a nice, rested nap. Anglers are beginning to visit now that docks are going in the water and to take advantage of the quiet stillness of the lake during the Spring season. Fishing is a popular activity on the lake at this time and a good time to go, particularly if you are looking for large and small mouth bass and walleyes. Many mornings on the  commute to work, you will catch sight of those that enjoy the quiet solitude of mornings spent on the lake. If you are planning a fishing getaway, make sure to give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online @ www.deepcreekvacations.com). We can not only help you find the perfect house for you and your party, we will search extensively to find the one has a dock slip or is located on the part of the lake that is known to be a superior fishing spot. One of our smaller homes, Cross the River, is a gorgeous little two bedroom home that is located right on the shores of the Youghiogheny River, also known as a great river to fish, particularly if you’re fan of trout. Imagine spending your mornings and afternoons casting from your very own dock or from the lake’s shores.
For those that have no interest in fishing, now is still a wonderful time to visit for a relaxing weekend in the mountains. Choose to spend the weekend trying out one of our numerous golf courses, go horseback riding at a local stable or head to Wisp for a ride on their mountain coaster. What’s a mountain coaster, you may ask? Basically it is a one to two person (depending on size; think adult and smaller child) coaster that winds down Wisp Mountain. You even control the speed so if you are a big wimp, like me, you can slow it down. The daredevils can go a full 28 miles per hour). It’s extremely fun and a neat thing that you can brag to your friends about! Currently many of our homes are offering 3 nights for the price of 2 through the month of May so take advantage and give us a call. A weekend in the mountains can do wonders! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Because Anything Can Happen…

Mother Nature continues to astound us up here in the mountains as the snow still falls. Although a yearning for Spring and spring-like things is in the air, we do what we do best; we use it to our advantage! Looking for a fun-filled family activity? Pack up the kids and head over to Wisp’s snow tubing park for a day of excitement and adventure! Cross Country skiing? Snowmobiling? Snowshoeing? Just some of the many options of things to do in the area! Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations is offering some fantastic deals right now! Call now and ask about our “Stay 3 nights for the price of 2!” deal pertaining to most of our homes! I don’t know about you but a nice relaxing weekend away seems like the perfect solution for brushing off the winter blahs!
Taylor-Made employees recently had the pleasure of meeting with Kurt, their representative from Red Sky Travel Insurance. Red Sky Travel Insurance  is an optional traveler’s insurance that we offer to each guest that reserves a vacation home with us. Very often, most people assume that the travelers insurance is just an added cost and will not pertain to them so they choose to decline it. However, as we all know, life is not predictable. Although some could say “Better safe than sorry”, we look at it like, “Isn’t it just better to be prepared?” Anything can happen. Yes, the optional travelers insurance protects you and your family if you have to cancel your vacation due to an unseen medical emergency, but do you know that it also protects you if you have to interrupt your vacation and depart early? What if Little Johnny ignores your pleas and decides that he is, in fact, quite ready to take on the bigger ski slope? An ambulance ride and a cast later, and you are very grateful that you opted to accept the travelers insurance! We proudly offer this to our guests, so please take a moment and ask your Reservationist to explain the policy to you when you are reserving your vacation home.

Easter Bunny!!
Don’t forget that if you are in the area this weekend, The Deep Creek Discovery Center is once again hosting an egg dying session using all natural dyes. You just need to bring your own boiled eggs and they will help you with the rest. The Easter Bunny will also be there with treats and to take pictures with the kids! Definitely fun for the whole family!
No matter what season you choose to visit us here at Deep Creek Lake, there is always something fun, new, and exciting to do! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Ice, Ice, Baby

So, as you are driving down Rt.219, traveling through Garrett County, you may catch a glimpse of some little tents sporadically spread across Deep Creek Lake. Garrett Countians, being the resourceful folk that they are, have found yet another way to turn Deep Creek Lake into recreational use. We call this ice fishing and it is a very popular wintertime activity here in the mountains. Why would one choose to sit out in the cold and fish? For the goods, that’s why. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, chain pickerel, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish can all be found, according to the State Park’s website. Because the ice generally does not get thicker than 8-10 inches, a hand held auger can be used to create your hole. Some local vendors in our area even rent out the necessary equipment needed. Many people find it a peaceful way to enjoy the fresh outside air and the tents, although not necessary, do help to block out the some of the wind. To learn more about this wintertime activity, click on the link below. Otherwise, we’ll see on the lake (literally…) . Please make sure you check with the local bait shops to see if and where it is safe to go out on the lake to ice fish.
