A Christmas Celebration

Spruce Artisan Village
Do the hustle and bustle of the holidays wear you down? Take some time this weekend to experience a calmer and more meaningful event and visit the Spruce Forest Artisan Village in Grantville for their annual traditional Christmas celebration. Wander through the sparkling village and travel back to simpler days. Hosting its 29th year of the event, this Friday and Saturday (December 6th and 7th), guests will enjoy strolling through the village that will feature hundreds of luminaries lighting the pathways, fresh greenery and decorations will adorn the historic cabins which will lead over the Historic Cassleman Bridge. Enjoy warm apple cider in the Yoder House and listen to the hosts as they describe how the first Europeans settled in the area and started some of the first holiday traditions. Walk through each studio gallery to see and buy fine Appalachian crafts, including Lynn Lais’s pottery, Ann Jones’ weaving, Mike Edelman’s ironwork, Douglas Salmon’s metals, Gene Gillespie’s turned wood, Gary Yoder’s bird and feather carving, and guest artists Lenore Lancaster with colored pencil drawings and prints. Local musical talent will add to the festivities as their will be several different artists playing throughout the event. It really is a fun festival that allows you and your family to take a moment to truly appreciate the holiday traditions that have been around for so long. Admission to the event is free although donations are always greatly appreciated. Christmas in the Village takes place from 4-8pm on Friday December 6, and noon until 8 pm Saturday December 7, 2013.  For directions or event information, please call the Village office 301-895-3332 or visit www.spruceforest.org.
Just another peaceful day at the lake!

Wisp still has snow and currently open with 5 trails that are usable. The ice-skating rink and snow tubing park are also both open, as well as the Mountain Coaster. There are definitely a lot of great activities going on this weekend so now is the time to take advantage of some of our great discounts. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Snow and A Festival

It’s officially time to break out the winter wear! Mother Nature blessed us with a fluffy blanket of white this past week and with the significant drop in the temperatures, I think we can no longer deny that winter is quickly approaching. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and our vacation homes are booking up so now is the time to call.  (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) Start a new family tradition and gather together to come and stay with us in the mountains. Imagine gathering around a crackling fireplace as you share stories and play games. All of our homes have fully stocked kitchens so you have everything you need to create that perfect Thanksgiving meal. Dislike cooking? Many of our restaurants will be serving traditional dinners or pick up a catered meal and enjoy it in your home. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? We will even sweeten the deal with by reserving your 3 night stay at a 2 night price! That’s right, we will even throw in the 3rd night free!

While you’re in over the holiday, I highly recommend that you check out The Festival of Trees! This festival is held on November 29th and 30thfrom 9am till 6pm at the McHenry Fairgrounds. Bring the whole family and start the morning off with breakfast with Santa. Silent auctions run throughout the day and there will be plenty of vendors on site giving you the perfect chance to find that perfect gift for someone! Hungry? Head over to Mrs. Claus’ kitchen where there will food and drinks for sale throughout the day. The kids will love Frosty’s Funland where there will be face painting, crafts, The Elfenheim Mall (where kids can shop for their family and friends and all items are just $1) and more! Stroll throughout the building and take in all of the carefully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces! Saturday concludes with a Live Auction of these items. The holidays are an open invite for “Good Old Fashioned Fun” and The Festival of Trees is a true statement of that.
Come out and enjoy the fun! http://www.fotgc.com/index.php  Until then, we can’t wait to see you at the lake! #lovedeepcreek #lifeinthemountains #familytime

Let The Shopping Commence!

I am a Christmas shopping procrastinator. It’s not that I don’t love giving gifts because I do, I am just not a big fan of crowded malls and large stores. I have finally come to a no-brainer solution. Shop Local! We have so many great little shops here in Garrett County that it seems silly that I wouldn’t frequent them more often. By far, one of my very favorite shops is Four All Seasons Gift Shop located in the Dry Dock Plaza at Deep Creek Lake. Whether you are looking for a fun and funky new toy for the kids, a new amazing handbag for mom, or even football memorabilia, this shop definitely has something for everyone. Unfortunately, the shop will be closing its doors for good very soon but in the meantime, everything in the store is marked way down and with an extra 40% off everything, it’s a deal that can’t be beat. So, I headed there first. Considering the countdown had begun, the pressure to start marking names off my list was on. An hour later, I started to feel a little victorious at all of the awesome deals I had found.

40% off everything!

Arms laden with my many packages, I decided to check out The Christmas Chalet located across from Uno’s next. http://www.christmaschalet.com/ Ebenezer Scrooge could not walk in there and not immediately get in the spirit of the holiday. Tons of brightly colored Christmas trees and decorations beautifully illuminated as far as the eyes could see! There is an ornament for absolutely everyone on your list! Dog and cat lovers, dancers, teddy bears, s’mores, sports fanatics, whatever you are looking for its most likely in there. After carefully choosing some awesome Steeler Christmas tree bulbs, a yummy cinnamon/ apple candle and some other odds and ends, I left very content with my purchases. Exhausted from all of my mad spending, I made a quick dash into Trader’s Coffee House for a rejuvenating cappuccino. Yep, I have to say that local shopping is definitely the way to go!

Okay, altogether now…. Think Snow!

Aawww! December and the 25 day countdown begins! 25 days of Christmasmusic, Christmas movies, enticing shopping offers, Christmas goodies (and proof positive that I have very little will power when it comes to saying No to all things homemade and yummy!) and let us not forget the Christmas parties and activities! What a fun month to enjoy here at Deep Creek Lake!

A familiar humming sound has been heard echoing on the mountain top lately as Wisp is eagerly trying to crank out the snow so the official ski season can begin! (Fun fact: Did you know that back in 1956, the year after Wisp first opened, Recreational Industries attempted to make snow for the first time. The machines resembled lawn sprinklers which emitted frozen pellets of water.)  Of course, the snow blowers today are much more high tech.
They have a decent base of snow started and hopefully the temperatures will continue to drop in the evening allowing for the snow to be made.  Hard to believe that next weekend is Wisp’s 57th birthdaycelebration! They will be offering all kinds of amazing deals on discounted lift tickets, rentals, and lessons. There will also be entertainment, games, and more birthday fun (Come on Mother Nature, cooperated with us here!) Just to think, 57 years ago, one man by the name of Mr. Helmuth Heise had a vision. What many saw as just a cow pasture, Helmuth saw a makeshift ski lift. A one room hut with a potbellied stove served as the first lodge and the bed of a pickup truck operated as the first ski rental shop. Now all of these years later, the Wisp Resort is now considered  the premiere ski and golf destination in the state of Maryland. In the winter, guests flock to the area for the chance to challenge ski slopes, have a blast at the snow tubing park or enjoy some time at the newly designed ice skating rink. Throughout the rest of the year, Wisp still offers a bevy of activities from the mountain coaster that winds down the mountain, the exquisite golf course, mountain buggy tours, Disc golf, the Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour, and much, much more.
