Saying So Long to Summer! Make the last days count!

Deep-2BCreek-2BDiscovery-2BCenter-2B004

The local kids in our area recently returned to school this week along with many other counties here in Western Maryland. Seems too early for school but at least we have another weekend to squeeze in some summer fun before Labor Day arrives. If you are visiting our area for the week, don’t forget to stop by the Farmer’s Market in downtown Oakland on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am – 1pm. So many great choices of fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods and more. Because every vendor doesn’t come every week (although most do), you always get a variety of different tables. There was a vendor from Pennsylvania there on Wednesday that was pedaling some stunning pottery pieces. Candles, handmade carved wooden crafts, quilts, and list goes on. It’s also a great chance to check out some of the neat shops in Oakland like the Book Market & Antique Mezzanine which offers everything from the latest best sellers to a large selection of kid’s books and toys. The back of the store showcases some amazing antiques for sell. Definitely a neat store and worth the stop! It’s a perfect time to capture some of the charm of our small town flair.

If you haven’t made your plans for Labor Day yet, I suggest that you call now as our availability is starting to become limited. It’s one last chance to make unforgettable summer memories and I can think of no place better to do this than here at Deep Creek Lake. Imagine you and your family spending the weekend boating and water tubing on the water. Rent a jet ski for an early morning romp around the McHenry cove or maybe a relaxing kayak trip is just what you need. FJetSkior the outdoor adventurers, hiking and mountain biking are great options especially if you head to one of the many state parks in the area. Swallow Falls State Park showcases the largest free fall standing waterfall in the state of Maryland and is absolutely breathtaking to see. Wisp Resort offers a bevy of fun activities whether you choose to zip line down the mountain, ride the mountain coaster, play a friendly game of disc golf, and so much more. Only 3 ½ hours from the Washington D.C. / Baltimore area and 2 ½ from Pittsburgh, it’s a relatively short drive. Give us a call today (1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com ) and let us help you find the perfect vacation home for your next Deep Creek stay. Lakefront homes are going fast so make sure you call today! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Shop Till You Drop @ Schoolhouse Earth!

As the sun continued to dance through the clouds, my need to escape the office and enjoy it become a possibility today when I had to make a stop at Schoolhouse Earth to pick up some flyers for our office. Enjoy the sun and get to go to one of my all-time favorite shops in our area? I love the perks of my job! Even pulling into the parking area, you can see that there is a large array of lawn ornaments on display outside. I am a true sucker for outdoor décor including flags, wind chimes, you name it! (And yes, even garden gnomes!) Here you will a large variety to choose from. With 3 separate buildings, it feels like a bit of a magical village! I head to the first building and I am lost in shopping heaven! So many jewelry choices! Big loud bold necklaces or dainty little birthstone chains, rings, earrings, something for everyone’s taste! Walking in further and here you will find a variety of beautiful scarves and purses! Completing this circle I find a wall of candles to choose from! It’s like finding all of my favorite things in this one little spot! I basically just walked in a daze throughout all of the buildings simply in awe over how many things I saw that I suddenly desperately felt that I needed and must have immediately! The building to the right was another delight! Here you could find an expansive collection whether you were looking for some home décor such as curtains or specialty dishes for your kitchen collection. Speaking of which, for those Foodies out there, they have an amazing collection of specialty dips, mustards, crackers, etc. Also for the wine lovers, they have a fun and unique array of wall plaques, wine glasses, wine glass accessories (these apparently are quite popular), and more! For the kids section, they have a great collection of games, puzzles, books, and toys to choose from! I try to think of myself as a grown up but I saw A lot of kid’s items that I was ready to rip open and play with! So many cool things to choose from!
Your fun continues to flow outside when you walk to the back area of the shops to see the little petting/feeding area. While they do have a few alpacas and a donkey on site, they chose to stay back and just do their own thing. I did however, get to witness Spencer, the Rooster as he strutted about. Charlie Brown the goat also came by to say Hi! Both seemed more concerned with the fresh watermelon rine they had been given just a few minutes prior to be completely honest but it was nice that they were willing to swagger by.
Schoolhouse Earth is not just an average stop that you come across, it’s an entire shopping experience. It’s the kind of specialty shop that you go to and are able to find that one perfect gift that you know will make your best friend’s day. It’s a neat place where the cashiers are pleasant and helpful and you just know that they really like their job. If you are lucky enough to meet Stephen, the owner, he will happily guide you around and help you find exactly what you are looking for! We always believe it is important to support our local shops but we also recommend Schoolhouse Earth because it truly is one of our favorite shops around Deep Creek Lake and we want you to experience the best while you are here!

Something to Smile About!

Gotcha!
My boys & I were feeling a little playful the other day & since Smiley’s Fun Zone is one of Deep Creek’s most popular “play grounds”, we decided to head there! What an arrangement of fun activities for kids of all ages (and clearly, adults too!) Speed along the outdoor go kart course or try to soak your competition in the Smiley’s Bumper Boats! For those who like a slower pace, grab your clubs and try a round of mini-golf. The best thing about Smiley’s is that there are so many activities to choose from that you can literally make a whole day of it. We then enjoyed a delicious light lunch out on the deck. They have a large menu that includes pizza, wraps, salads, and more (not to mention their large variety of wings!) The kid’s menu has a nice selection to choose from and for those that need to keep entertained while waiting for the meal (Me!) they offer crayons to color the menu! To me, it’s just a nice place to eat while you enjoy the beautiful scenery of McHenry Cove. Afterwards, we spent some time inside playing arcade games and the boys finished with a rousing game of laser tag! All in all, it was a very successful day of family fun! I highly recommend that you bring out the inner kid in you and take the family!

Beautiful foggy morning on Deep Creek Lake!
It’s so hard to believe that the Worlds Canoe/Slalom is going to be here @ Deep Creek in just 2 days with the opening ceremony starting Wednesday night! The celebration begins at the CARC with live entertainment such as XPogo (featured on American’s Got Talent), a renowned steel drum group and a performance by our very own local Award Winning Boundless Energy from Brenda’s Body Shop! It continues to flow over to the Wisp with musical entertainment, cash & concessions, and a fireworks display! We have many different teams staying with us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales so it is exciting to invite them here to enjoy Deep Creek and the surrounding area. Fall, Food, & Fun!

Add caption
Today is one of those “Wow” kind of Deep Creek days!  Clear blue skies and comfortable 70’s kind of weather. The lake is sparkling and the trees are still full, lush and bright green. September is one of my all-time favorite months! The air starts getting crisp in the evening, perfect for bonfires! Kids settle back into school, everything and everyone starts slowing down just a bit and let’s not forget football season! It’s the best time to gather with friends and family for an extended weekend getting away. “But what is there to do now?” What isn’t there to do? Give us a call at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations and we will help you out. (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com)  If you’re lucky enough to be in the area this weekend, stop by the Garrett County Fair Grounds and check out the Deep Creek Art & Wine Festival that is being held there this weekend. A simple fee of $25 gets you into the festival where you get to enjoy wine samplings, live entertainment, various vendors selling various forms of their art, and kid’s activities. Beat the line and stop by our office and purchase your tickets there!

Deep Creek Discovery Center is beginning their “First Late Summer” Canoe tours this Saturday. Take a leisurely paddle through mountain cove with one of their naturalist! A superb way to celebrate your Saturday. Call soon as space is limited! 301-387-7067

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations would also like to give a huge shout out and heartfelt thank you to Fred and Christine from The Historic Stone House Restaurant & Country Inn for providing us with a scrumptious catered lunch today! Located in Farmington, PA, The Historic Stone House is a mere 30 minutes from Deep Creek Lake and they offer a full lunch and dinner menu that has something to offer everyone! If nothing else, stop by and check out their bar menu which features over 20 different beers on tap; the perfect place for catching all of the NFL action (or in this case Steeler Football!) I would have loved to add a picture of all of the delicious food they brought but this hungry crew dug in before I was given a chance! Smoked brisket, chicken and pulled pork went perfectly on the fresh made rolls. Fresh made coleslaw, potato salad and everyone’s favorite homemade creamy mac-n-cheese were also part of the menu. Absolutely wonderful food! Again, thank you so much, we loved it! http://www.stonehouseinn.com/dining  In the meantime, the mountains are calling and we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Accident… a charming small town!

I had the pleasure of taking a trip through the town of Accident the other day. Accident is a small town located north of Deep Creek Lake and is usually seen by visitors as “the small town they pass through to get to the lake”. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the town offers a great deal to both visitors and locals.  Of course, the first statement that we always hear is about how the town has such a strange name. Was it ‘by accident’? As a matter of fact it was! Interesting history fact: A gentleman by the name of Mr.George Deakins was to receive 600 acres of land in Western Maryland as a debt from King George II of England. Mr. Deakins sent out 2 corps of engineers, each without knowledge of the other, to survey the best land in the area. Up return and to their great surprise, each one had marked the same property. Mr.Deakins named the land “The Accident Track”, hence now the town of Accident!
Our first stop and one I always make when traveling through the area is FireFly Farms Creamery and Market, where you can buy some of their award winning cheeses (made on site!). They also offer an abundance of wines, specialty jams, crackers, and spreads. They really do offer a huge selection and encourage you to try as many as the cheeses that you wish. We scored our goods and were on your way! I highly recommend that you check them out!
The history buffs in the group will enjoy visiting Drane House, significant for its unique architecture and seen as a window into early Pioneer Garrett County life. It is believed to be one of the oldest standing structures in Garrett County today. Visitors can call and schedule to take a tour of the home. If interested, contact the Accident Town Hall 301-746-6346.
Other visitors may enjoy visiting the town over the Fourth of Julywhere they hold an annual Fourth of July parade. Craft shows and various entertainment are located throughout the town on this day and it’s a superb way to spend a special family day celebrating our patronage.

Our last stop was Annie’s Kitchen Country Restaurant for some lunch! First timer for me and I am now hooked. I chose the 6 inch Italian Sub (thank goodness I didn’t go for the bigger sub as this was enormous!). I have to say it was possibly one of the best subs I have ever had! Made with all fresh ingredients, they use a lot of herbs in the seasoning which really gives it a boost in flavor! (I’m already plotting a return stop!) The restaurant itself is charmingly decorated with memorabilia from the family run establishment with lots of pictures and signs and such. It definitely has a warm and cozy ambience. With some subtle eavesdropping, I also found out that their breakfast (served all day) is amazing. Check it out the next time that you are coming to the lake or even on your way out of town! You will not regret it.

Not much longer!

As we prepare to “Spring Ahead” with our clocks this weekend, we are still very much in winter mode with lots of snow on the ground and the Wisp is still open and going strong. A perfect time to call us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com ) to check out some fantastic last minute specials on that perfect vacation home for you and your family and friends! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland….

Our Gigantic Christmas Tree!

It’s finally beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Mother Nature has been rather fickle for the majority of December often giving us warm days up into the 60s. This week, however, is more typical of Garrett County. We thought “Snow” and here it is fluttering to the ground as I type this. This month has been a busy one here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations. We started off the month with our annual charity drive. This year we chose to send care packages to soldiers that are stationed overseas. We chose 3 different soldiers and sent items according to what they specifically asked for. Popular requests were snack foods, baby wipes, chap stick, foot powder, hygiene products and more. All in all we gathered approximately $700 worth of goods that were shipped. So, this is big shout out and thank you to my coworkers who used stellar teamwork to get these out in time for the holidays. You guys are the best!

Who’s the lucky winner?

We then continued the holiday cheer with our annual Holiday party! I must admit, no one knows how to celebrate quite like the crew at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations! Because we now have the space with are new, bigger office, we held the party here. Angie Bosley and her crew did a remarkable job of catering the party. They had our main Great Room elegantly decorated in gorgeous hues of red and gold and accented with lots of lights. The food was absolutely delicious (her meatballs are to die for!!) So, a big thank you to Angie and her help for the fabulous food and display. We continued our tradition with our “Yankee Swap” where everyone vied for various gift cards and crafts. I came away with a gift certificate to McHenry Beverage, which will come in handy with some bubbly for New Years. Another thank you also goes out to Joe, Jodi, and Chad for once again being so thoughtful to your employees and hosting a wonderful party.
If you are going to be in the area this Monday, December 24th, please stop by our office. Santa Claus will be here from 10 am- 12 noon where he will be reading Christmas stories to the little kids. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served as well. Bring a camera, the family, and come visit us! It’s going to be a great time and we would love to see you!

Breathtaking!

Wisp Resort is currently cranking out the snow so it’s a great time to call in and begin planning your winter getaway. As usual, we are offering some great specials and don’t forget about our “Ski Free Stay Free Package” where you stay and ski for 3 nights for the price of 2. Call and speak to one of our reservationist (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) about this and the other great packages we are offering.
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations would like to take this time to wish our friends, homeowners, and guests a truly wonderful and safe holiday season! We will see you at the lake!

A Lunch Date and Birthday Wishes!

It’s hard to believe that we are already heading into the month of November. It’s sad to see October leave as it is by far my favorite month. How can you not love a month that brings brilliant hues of orange, red, and yellow covering the mountaintop? A month that brings Fall Festivals, Apple Butter, Football, and ends with Halloween and lots and lots of candy? It’s also a fabulous birthday month as well. Now, granted, my opinion is a little skewed and biased due to the fact that we share the same DNA, but October is the month of my firstborn son, Devin’s birthday. This year, we decided to enjoy lunch out together with lakeside dining at Uno’s Chicago Grill. Due to the slightly chilly air, we choose to eat inside but were still awarded with a table by the window that offers fantastic lake views. We decided to split some appetizers so we went with the ultimate nachos and pizza skins. I hate to think of the calories consumed but it was so well worth it. Since the damage was apparently already done, we also split the Reese Cup sundae for dessert. Heavenly! Afterwards, we walked down by the water for some photos. We really had an enjoyable afternoon together. I also like to recommend Uno’s for our guests that are visiting in summer because of the convenience of coming by boat but they also offer a lot of specials throughout the other seasons which they combine to work with The Honi Honi bar located next door. They will once again be kicking off the holiday season with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony held on November 24th @ 7 pm. Bring the kids for pictures with Santa, live entertainment, Christmas carols and free hot chocolate! If you haven’t booked your vacation home for the Thanksgiving holiday, now is definitely the time to call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) to make sure that you get the home that best suits you and your guests.
As I mentioned earlier, October is an awesome birthday month so we would like to give a Birthday shout out to some of our staff this month! Birthday wishes go out to Linda Winters, one of our beloved hardworking ladies from Housekeeping! From our Reservation’s Department, we give a birthday hooray shout to both Lisa Yommer and Stefany Glotfelty. We are so lucky to have you ladies as part of our team here @ Taylor-Made and we send you heartfelt wishes for a superb birthday!  Ski season is just around the corner so start making your Deep Creek vacation plans right away. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Mother May I?

Here we are bursting into the month of May! Who doesn’t love the month of May? It’s that time of the year where the outdoors explode with life, the month that children eagerly start crossing off days on the calendar while anxiously waiting for the last day of school. The month where you can begin to daydream of hot summer days spent swimming in the lake, barbeques, and basically all things summer! Now is a great time to come visit our mountains as the leaves are turning lush and green, docks are going in and we are running some fabulous spring specials. Not sure what to do while you’re in the area? With several state parks to choose from, now is a spectacular time for hiking and mountain biking. Now, yes, I am a big fan of Swallow Falls State Park. It’s hard to go wrong with the sheer beauty of the falls and walking trails, so this time I decided to go a different route and so the family and I headed down to New Germany State Park, located outside of Grantsville, and approximately 30 minutes from McHenry. With over 10 miles of walking trails, you may find yourself wandering through a dense hemlock forest, colorful mixed hardwoods, rhododendron-filled stream valleys or towering pines and spruces. Hiking, trail-running and biking are the most popular activities throughout the year. Whether walking along the lake or wetland, or hiking the scenic trails, visitors are sure to have an opportunity to view birds and wildlife. Abundant bird species can be found throughout the area, such as pileated woodpeckers, black-capped chickadees, barred owls, great blue herons and an occasional osprey. In the late spring and summer, guests of the park can purchase snacks from the snack bar or rent a kayak or paddle boat to roam around the l3 acre lake. Swimming is also popular in the designated beach area. This Friday, May 4, there will be a “Live Jam” held at the Lake House. This is an awesome opportunity for musicians and spectators alike to join together to play and enjoy traditional folk, bluegrass, and any “old-time” Appalachian style music! Again this will be held in the Lake House from 6:30-9:30 and the admission is free! Check it out!  Mother’s Day is just around the corner so now is the perfect time to treat mom to a weekend getaway. Call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations today to begin finding your perfect vacation home.  We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Say Cheese!!!

Last week Jodi, Linda, and I took advantage of the warmer weather and headed out of the office for a field trip excursion. We found ourselves in Accident to check out Firefly Farms, a new establishment that recently opened. What a charming little shop! Specializing in artisanal goat cheeses (made mostly in house), here you can purchase delicacies such as cheese, crackers, jams, spreads, wine, and more. We met with owner, Andrea, who was kind enough to show us around and let us sample some of their fantastic cheeses (although they were all wonderful, I was particularly fond of the Allegheny Chevre).
The shop was designed so that visitors could observe the cheese making process through the large windows. They have plans in the near future for visitors to be able to actually take tours of the facility and to hear an in depth description of the cheese making process. Although you are now able to sample the cheeses and some jams, in the future they will also be doing some wine tasting at the shop as well. While in the shop, although you cannot miss it, please take time to check out the gorgeous mural on the wall that was painted and designed by renowned local artist, Mark Stutzman (most famous for his rendition of a young Elvis Presley on the US postage stamp.) It adds a wonderful serene ambience to the already quaint looking shop.
I highly recommend that the next time you are coming to the lake that you stop into the shop and check it out. Located on Main Street, it is impossible to miss. Say hello to Andrea, sample some cheese & crackers, and check out their assortment of other delicious appetizers. It is definitely worth the trip. Until next week, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
