After much anticipation, Deep Creek Lake winter weather has arrived! Wisp Resort is getting ready to operate on full gear very soon.
Currently there are 8 trails open including the snow tubing park, mountain coaster and ice skating rink so now is the ideal time to visit Deep Creek Lake.
For those that like to try something a little different, snow shoeing is also another adventurous activity to try while you are in the area. All Earth Eco Tours does some amazing tours throughout the Swallow Falls State Park area and is the perfect activity for the whole family (As one who is well known to be Adventure Challenged, i.e. clumsy, even I can say that I can accomplish this and I loved it!)
There are also various places to go cross country skiing around the area so don’t forget to ask about some of our favorite places to go when you call in! It’s always so surprising that we still get asked “What things are there to do at Deep Creek?” when we always answer “Everything!” Offering lots of terrific last minute specials on our Deep Creek Lake rentals, our Reservationists are ready to help you find the perfect home for your winter getaway! If you haven’t made plans yet, don’t forget that the 18th Annual MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk is coming up on February 20th. What has truly become a true Deep Creek Lake tradition for many, it is also a wonderful opportunity to help adults and children with special disabilities so that they may experience the joy of participating in the Maryland Special Olympics! Granted taking on the frigid waters of Deep Creek is no easy task but great fun is had by all and the costumes and outfits that you get to see is so worth it! Kiss, Pee Wee Herman, and Teen Wolf are just some of the many creative people you get see run in the water! Again, all for a great cause. Do you dare to dunk?
Again, you must call us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations and let us help you find the home that fits your needs! The Snow is here! We can’t wait to see you at the lake! #deepcreeklake #skiwisp #daretodunk
While we have been teased with some snow dusting, we have not yet experienced a true Garrett County winter storm yet. We are being patient however, and still enjoy being outside in the warmer than normal temperatures.
If you are in the area this weekend, we recommend that you head over to Bear Creek Traders Christmas Open House running from Thursday the 10th through Sunday the 13th daily. For these 4 days, they are offering everything in the store @ a 20% discount! What a great deal! Trust me, you will definitely find something for everyone on your list at Bear Creek! NFL goodies, Deep Creek apparel, home décor, kid’s gifts, pet items, the list is truly endless (including what appears like an old fashioned candy bin filled with lots of sweet tooth goodies!). They also have a wonderful supply of winter wear; hats and clothes for kids of all ages and even stylish scarves and coats for women! Jewelry! Did I mention that they have jewelry? Earrings, rings, necklaces, watches, so many pretty things. The first thing that will catch your eye though is the big Santa Claus statue that greets you walk in the door. He already posed and camera ready! For those friends of yours that love to add to their holiday décor, they offer a great selection of everything from snowmen figurines, candles, Christmas tree decorations and much more! They will also be running some of their special December bargains and giving out a complimentary gift with each purchase (Who doesn’t love free gifts?). Definitely worth stopping by!

There has been whispers and rumors floating around that the S word is about to make an appearance. For our winter enthusiasts, this is greeted with smiles and lots of “Bring it on!” For those that are little less of a fan, they hate to see this warmer fall weather take absence! Regardless if it’s this weekend or later, snow will definitely be making an appearance. Now is the perfect time to enjoy a nice weekend getaway. Weather is still nice enough (snow or not) to take advantage of our many hiking trails throughout our state parks! Swallow Falls State Park will always impress but Deep Creek State Park also offers some amazing walking and mountain biking trails! Definitely worth checking out! We here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (www.deepcreekvacations.com or 1-866-351-1119) are still offering some phenomenal discounts including Stay 3 Nights for the Price of 2 now through December 20th. If you happen to be visiting our area and looking for a special and unique dining experience, I would recommend checking out Cornish Manor Restaurant in Oakland. Standing immense it’s Victorian glory, it definitely makes a pretty first impression. Belated birthday celebrations took my teenage son and me there last week for lunch. Offering multiple dining areas, they were just busy enough to be comfortable but you still had your choice seating wise (if you are planning on dining during the weekend and/ or for dinner, I think that they may require reservations). Wraparound windows give you the opportunity to enjoy the outside sunlight or you can choose by the wall for more intimate conversations. They offer a large variety of choices for the lunch menu alone; choose seafood pasta, the quiche of the day, or their infamous warm chicken salad served in a bread bowl! Incredible! While the prices are slightly larger than your average Value Meal, the portions are huge and the flavor is divine! The 1860’s Victorian is elegantly decorated throughout and you can truly feel the homes captivating charm and history. Located in our county seat of Oakland, it’s a mere 15-20 minute ride from McHenry and the heart of Deep Creek Lake! Again, if you are looking for a new dining establishment while visiting, Cornish Manor is definitely worth the trip! To Snow or Not Snow? That is the question. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
Our fall colors are starting to show and they should be perfectly peaking in time for the Autumn Glory Festival held the weekend of October 9th! Such a fun time to come and visit! Give us call at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales and we will be more than happy to help you find the perfect vacation rental for you and your group. We recently welcomed a new home onto our rental market and I can honestly say that it took my breath away. “Serenity Now” is an extraordinary 5 bedroom lakefront home with an indoor swimming pool! One step inside and you know that you are going to experience a truly remarkable Deep Creek vacation. Luxurious décor flows throughout the home, also enhanced by the remarkable hardwood floors and massive stone fireplace in the Great Room. The open floor plan allows you and your family to create delicious meals in the fully stocked kitchen while still conversing with friends and family. Each bedroom is extremely spacious and offers elegant, top of the line bedding. A peaceful night’s sleep is a given.
Now, back to that swimming pool. Wow! Rainy days cannot possibly damper your stay when you and the kids have the whole private pool to yourselves. Comfortable and decorative patio furnishings adorn the room so that the parents can read a book or just enjoy watching the kids swim and splash. Due to the larger size of the pool, adults can jump in and splash and play as well. Outside, the big level yard promises fun lawn games and your dock slip is just an easy stroll away. The outdoor fire pit will provide evenings of roasting marshmallows and story sharing. Located in the Waterfront Greens Community, you and your guests have use of the 3 par golf course, mini putt putt course, catch and release pond and the sledding hill in the winter months. Definitely has something to offer everyone in your party. If you really want to experience a truly extraordinary Deep Creek vacation, I highly recommend that you check out the home Serenity Now. http://www.deepcreekvacations.com/booking/serenity-now/1314-105856
In the meantime, there is time left to experience our spectacular fall foliage. The Thanksgiving holiday is now beginning to book rather quickly so in order to make sure you reserve the best home to accommodate your group, call us today. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
We are sailing into fall and are now starting to see the first changing of the leaves. This weekend is the big SavageMan Triathlon where athletes flock to our mountainous area to tackle our hills with their bikes, swim in Deep Creek and race down our roads! Definitely a competitive sport and one that is intense to watch! Of course we welcome these athletes and their families with open arms! We love that they can participate in such a great charitable event and experience the beauty of our area at the same time. We are also being gifted with dream like weather this week with bright blue skies and lots of sunshine. Temperatures have been ideal and in the mid-70s. This is also the perfect time for evening bonfires. Many of our vacation rentals have outdoor fire pits so if you are planning on visiting us, make sure you let your Reservationist know this so she can help you find one with this particular amenity. Call us at 1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com and click this option when you are putting in your requirements for your search. Speaking of going online, have you checked our newly launched website. As before, it is very user friendly but also has a fresh new look. Not only is it easy to search for a home with your certain criteria but you also see our vacation packages, check out our photo gallery, read our policies and procedures and more. You can also easily navigate over to our Real Estate section for those that are thinking of buying or listing a home. As I continue to somewhat boast, there is also a very thorough and informative 3D virtual floor plan that we now offer for our homes (not all have one right now but they all will in the near future). This is a great tool to have when you trying to see if a house would work out for you and your family. You can go in and maneuver throughout the rooms and floors, perfect for trying to decide who may be sleeping where. I highly recommend you check out (plus it’s kind of fun!)
The Autumn Glory Festival will be here shortly. The entire festival kicks off on Wednesday October 7th and the big parade held in Oakland is Saturday the 10th. There are so many fun filled family activities to do that weekend! By tradition if you do join in the celebration, don’t forget to pick up your turkey dinner. There are numerous dining establishments in the area who join in with awesome local tradition and offer a full turkey dinner with all of the trimmings! Again, give us a call and let us help you find your Deep Creek home! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
If you haven’t already made plans to attend the annual Deep Creek Art & Wine Festival this upcoming weekend (September 11-13th), it’s not to late! Gather the girlfriends or make it a couples retreat & come visit for a weekend full of fun activities. On Friday evening, many of our local dining establishments have planned special wine pairing menus so you can start enjoying the festivities when you arrive. The Wine Festival on Saturday begins at 12 noon and goes to 6 pm while the wine store will continue to stay open until 7 pm. Activities run throughout the day and feature everything from live entertainment, carriage rides, a photo booth and more. Of course there is the reason you came to the festival; the art & wine. Over 30 local artists will be present selling a variety of items like pottery, oil paintings, jewelry, wood carvings and more. Also there will be National Distributors and Maryland wineries there to offer samplings of over 200 different kinds of wine. Definitely something for everyone’s different tastes. The food fare is another great reason to attend. There will be many food artisans there so you can grab a bite while at the festival or choose to take some home with you like Firefly Farms amazing goat cheese or fresh produce and products from Deberry’s Farm. The very best part of the festival? The proceeds go to HART which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the lives of homeless pets in Garrett County. A huge win-win for everyone! We are now offering last minute discount on all available vacation rental homes so now is the perfect time to call us! A fun packed weekend enjoyed art and wine with your friends or another weekend of doing nothing! Make it Count! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
The local kids in our area recently returned to school this week along with many other counties here in Western Maryland. Seems too early for school but at least we have another weekend to squeeze in some summer fun before Labor Day arrives. If you are visiting our area for the week, don’t forget to stop by the Farmer’s Market in downtown Oakland on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am – 1pm. So many great choices of fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods and more. Because every vendor doesn’t come every week (although most do), you always get a variety of different tables. There was a vendor from Pennsylvania there on Wednesday that was pedaling some stunning pottery pieces. Candles, handmade carved wooden crafts, quilts, and list goes on. It’s also a great chance to check out some of the neat shops in Oakland like the Book Market & Antique Mezzanine which offers everything from the latest best sellers to a large selection of kid’s books and toys. The back of the store showcases some amazing antiques for sell. Definitely a neat store and worth the stop! It’s a perfect time to capture some of the charm of our small town flair.
If you haven’t made your plans for Labor Day yet, I suggest that you call now as our availability is starting to become limited. It’s one last chance to make unforgettable summer memories and I can think of no place better to do this than here at Deep Creek Lake. Imagine you and your family spending the weekend boating and water tubing on the water. Rent a jet ski for an early morning romp around the McHenry cove or maybe a relaxing kayak trip is just what you need. For the outdoor adventurers, hiking and mountain biking are great options especially if you head to one of the many state parks in the area. Swallow Falls State Park showcases the largest free fall standing waterfall in the state of Maryland and is absolutely breathtaking to see. Wisp Resort offers a bevy of fun activities whether you choose to zip line down the mountain, ride the mountain coaster, play a friendly game of disc golf, and so much more. Only 3 ½ hours from the Washington D.C. / Baltimore area and 2 ½ from Pittsburgh, it’s a relatively short drive. Give us a call today (1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com ) and let us help you find the perfect vacation home for your next Deep Creek stay. Lakefront homes are going fast so make sure you call today! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
|Exhibit of Brant Coal Mine
While most of the East coast is suffering in a July hot spell this week, life up here in the mountains is looking & feeling close to perfect. With temperatures in the comfortable mid-70’s, we have also escaped the high humidity that everyone is experiencing! Just another perk to living in the mountains and on a lake! I had the pleasure of stopping by the Deep Creek Discovery Center yesterday and if you haven’t been there before or it’s been awhile, I highly recommend that you check it out. Located right beside the Deep Creek State Park, it is a great place to take the kids for a chance to learn a little bit about Deep Creek Lake and some of the wildlife and history of our area. When you first enter, there is a neat little room to the left that showcases the Brant Coal Mine which was located within Meadow Mountain and was formed in the early 20’s by two local Garrett County men who were looking to make the fortune in the coal mining industry. Very interesting story and facts and the room is visually interesting as well. Walking further into the Discovery Center, you will see various types of aquatic life on exhibit. There is an aquarium which features some of the different types of fish that can be found in Deep Creek Lake, as well as a few turtles. There is also examples of some of the wildlife such as a stuffed bear, fox, and even a rattlesnake skin and an actual big black garden snake! (At least that is what I think it said. Cage or not, I like to keep a considerable distance from anything slithery!) The lower level has an exhibit room and an area where the kids can go around and try some educational games like trying to identify certain paw prints from the charts that are given. Definitely a unique and fun way for the kids to learn while enjoying themselves on vacation.
|A Typical Day @ Deep Creek Lake
|From here, I strolled outside where you can walk down to the provided docks! This is very convenient for those that are traveling by boat but still want to stop by. I also checked out their outdoor aviary which was located in a quiet wooden area at the end of the parking lot. While the eagle station was down for the day due to maintenance, I did enjoy checking out the Red Tailed Hawk and Peregrine Falcon, both quite beautiful and magnificent to see. These birds are generally here because they have a handicap of some sort and it is safer for them to be cared for in captivity, then to be in the wild (for those that may feel guilty to see them in a confined space). In hindsight though, they both seemed very comfortable and were kind of showing off a bit, in my opinion! My suggestion would be to pack a nice picnic lunch, gather the family and head to the Discovery Center for something new to do. Afterwards, head over to the beach area for lunch and day of playing at the beach and swimming! A complete afternoon of family fun and worth checking out! Have you made your summer plans to visit us here at Deep Creek Lake yet? It is postcard picture perfect outside today and it looks like the weekend is just going to continue to give us nothing but blue skies and sunshine. Call us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us help you find that perfect vacation home rental! Offering everything from 1 -8 bedroom cabins, chalets, townhomes and more, we have something to suit everyone. Make Summer 2015 one to remember! We can’t wait to see you at the lake! #deepcreeklake #DCLlakelife #vacationrentals
Today is one of those days at Deep Creek that look like it could come straight from a postcard. Bright blue skies and lake sparkle against the lush mountainside, truly a breathtaking sight. Watching so many people having such a fun time, whether they are speeding along on a speed boat, hitting the waves on a jet ski, or taking the family tour on a pontoon boats, the squeals of joy and laughter are ringing loudly across the lake! For those that may be wandering if there are any activities to do that are not on the lake and the answer is “Of Course”! One place I love to suggest to families is to head over to Wisp’s Adventure Park. Generally when we speak of Wisp, we think of the mountains heaped in snow as people take on the ski and snowboarding trails but in the warmer months, Wisp offers a large variety of activities for all ages. For the young kids, the Chipmunk Challenge Course is a must try! This canopy tour is designed to test your kid’s prowess and athletic abilities while having at a blast at the same time. Participants are suited up with a harness, helmet, and are given the needed safety instructions. They then begin to maneuver the course which consists of everything from a Spider Net that must be crossed to a Tarzan Vine Rope. Each task requires the participant to pay close attention to their surroundings while using precision in balancing. They finally finish with the final zipline which sends them plummeting down 200 feet of cable. While the kids may not take in as much of the scenery, they do get to witness some of the most breathtaking views of the McHenry Cove when perched on top of the course. A fun activity that the kids will talk about for months afterwards and parents get some fantastic photo and video ops as well! While there are many more things to do at Wisp (golfing, disc golf, mountain biking, etc) this particular activity is perfect for kids 4 years and up that weigh at least 40 pounds.
If you have not made your summer plans to come and visit us here at Deep Creek, now is the time to do so! We have opened all homes up for partial week stays in July, ideal for those that are not able to get a full week off of work but still deserve a relaxing getaway. Give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com ) and let us help you find your families vacation dream home! We can’t wait to see you at the lake! #deepcreeklake #DCLlakelife #DCLvacationrentals
|The Dam was completed in 1925.
This year Deep Creek Lake is celebrating its 90thBirthday! How wonderful is that! In the early 1920s, the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company purchased land in Garrett County for the purpose of power generation. The tract that was chosen was where a large stream called Deep Creek flowed into the Youghiogheny River. A large earth and rock wall dam was built and completed. The 12 mile long reservoir filled with water and formed Deep Creek Lake, the largest inland body of water in the state of Maryland. Over the years, Deep Creek has grown in popularity as many continue to discover the scenic beauty of our area and of course the many recreational activities that one can do on the lake! We were recently named by TripAdvisor as one of the “Rising Vacation Rental Destinations of 2015” and it’s easy to see why. Summer days are spent swimming and playing on the lake. Cruise the lake by boat, take the kids for a ride on the water tubes or rent a jet ski for a morning of adventure. Canoes, kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards, water trampolines, the list of toys is long and plenty! For those that are looking for something a little more tranquil, bring your fishing boat for a quiet morning out on the lake! Even in the winter months, people take advantage of the frozen lake for ice fishing and snowmobiling. All of these awesome activities because man decided to create a lake and this year marks 90 years that people have been enjoying that choice!
|Water skiing in the 70s!
|In celebration of this historic event, Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales is hosting a FREE outdoor family movie night tomorrow evening here at our office (Saturday June 13th).
