What you can Discover @ Deep Creek!

Exhibit of Brant Coal Mine
While most of the East coast is suffering in a July hot spell this week, life up here in the mountains is looking & feeling close to perfect. With temperatures in the comfortable mid-70’s, we have also escaped the high humidity that everyone is experiencing! Just another perk to living in the mountains and on a lake! I had the pleasure of stopping by the Deep Creek Discovery Center yesterday and if you haven’t been there before or it’s been awhile, I highly recommend that you check it out. Located right beside the Deep Creek State Park, it is a great place to take the kids for a chance to learn a little bit about Deep Creek Lake and some of the wildlife and history of our area. When you first enter, there is a neat little room to the left that showcases the Brant Coal Mine which was located within Meadow Mountain and was formed in the early 20’s by two local Garrett County men who were looking to make the fortune in the coal mining industry. Very interesting story and facts and the room is visually interesting as well. Walking further into the Discovery Center, you will see various types of aquatic life on exhibit. There is an aquarium which features some of the different types of fish that can be found in Deep Creek Lake, as well as a few turtles. There is also examples of some of the wildlife such as a stuffed bear, fox, and even a rattlesnake skin and an actual big black garden snake! (At least that is what I think it said. Cage or not, I like to keep a considerable distance from anything slithery!) The lower level has an exhibit room and an area where the kids can go around and try some educational games like trying to identify certain paw prints from the charts that are given. Definitely a unique and fun way for the kids to learn while enjoying themselves on vacation.

A Typical Day @ Deep Creek Lake
From here, I strolled outside where you can walk down to the provided docks! This is very convenient for those that are traveling by boat but still want to stop by. I also checked out their outdoor aviary which was located in a quiet wooden area at the end of the parking lot. While the eagle station was down for the day due to maintenance, I did enjoy checking out the Red Tailed Hawk and Peregrine Falcon, both quite beautiful and magnificent to see. These birds are generally here because they have a handicap of some sort and it is safer for them to be cared for in captivity, then to be in the wild (for those that may feel guilty to see them in a confined space). In hindsight though, they both seemed very comfortable and were kind of showing off a bit, in my opinion! My suggestion would be to pack a nice picnic lunch, gather the family and head to the Discovery Center for something new to do. Afterwards, head over to the beach area for lunch and day of playing at the beach and swimming! A complete afternoon of family fun and worth checking out! Have you made your summer plans to visit us here at Deep Creek Lake yet? It is postcard picture perfect outside today and it looks like the weekend is just going to continue to give us nothing but blue skies and sunshine. Vacationing @ Deep Creek Lake~ Local Style PART 1

Loving Lake Life!

With some extra time off this past week, my family and I decided that we wanted to “take advantage of our natural resources” and experience a mini-vacation here at home (aka Deep Creek Lake). Our first evening, we decided to take it easy and just enjoy dinner and a movie. We chose to eat at Uno’s Chicago Grill as it is one of our favorite lakefront dining options (come by boat or car!). There is something relaxing about dining out of the deck as you watch everyone playing on the lawn and in the lake. After a fabulous meal, we headed over to Garrett 8 Cinemas. While I can’t say too much for the actual movie we watched, we did embrace the comfort of the AC. The next day, it was time for some adventure. The boys and I packed our lunch and headed to the lake to spend some fun time in the water! Cannonballs, competitive dining, floating lazily on our rafts, I didn’t think I could ever convince my crew to leave. We did have a wonderful afternoon though. The lake can be so refreshing! Our next stop was to swing by the Lakeside Creamery for some ice cream cones! Made on the premises with all fresh ingredients, it is clearly easy to see why this is favorite destination of visitors and locals! Yum! Exhausted but content we left and headed home. Our shenanigans continued throughout the next few days where we attempted to cram as much fun as possible into our time off. Look for Part II where you will find out who conquered mini-golf, who tried to cheat @ mini-golf, and how we took some breathtaking pictures of the McHenry Cove as we rode the scenic chairlift at Wisp Resort.

Full Moon!

In the meantime, summer days are sailing by so now is the time to call and reserve your vacation rental home. Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119; www.deepcreekvacations.com) has many homes to choose from and our staff is always more than willing to assist you in finding the perfect home to fit your family and friends. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Dare to Dunk!

Time to Dunk!
If you happen to be in the area this weekend and you notice a lot of very strangely clad folks running into Deep Creek Lake, you may question the sanity of those that are here. No worries! That is just all of the wonderful people that are participating in the 15th anniversary of the Deep Creek Dunk! Sponsored by the Maryland State Police, dunkers are asked to donate at least $50 in pledges to participate. Once they have made the pledge, Dunk participants take a quick dip in the lake behind Uno’s Bar and Grill.  This wonderful charity raises funds for Special Olympics Maryland, the state’s largest year round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The event is free to spectators, and Dunkers receive a commemorative sweatshirt, lunch courtesy of Uno Chicago Bar & Grill, group color photo, and the satisfaction of knowing that contributed to such a great cause. The last time I checked their website, the pledges were already over $110,000, which is absolutely amazing! Not to mention how fun the event is. You more than likely will see some “celebrities” such as Elvis, Spongebob, and  Kiss, the rock group! Entertainment also goes throughout the day and evening. If you are in the area, please stop by and support this awesome charity.
Summer Fun!

If you are planning on a summer vacation here at Deep Creek, now is the time to find your perfect vacation home. Lakefront homes tend to book quickly so if that is your preference, it is best to start your search sooner rather than later. Call our office (Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) and speak to one of our Reservationist to get explicit details on the homes that you are interested in. Our Reservations team goes out and views every home so that we can effectively answer your questions to the best of our knowledge. Not sure to do while you are in the area? Ask us! We can tell you the best places to go for hiking and biking, horseback riding, where to rent a boat and what special events are going on in the area during the time that you will be visiting.

Mother Nature continues to blanket the area with snow so the ski slopes at Wisp are still open and ready for you to tackle! If you are vertically challenged on the slopes (such as myself!) then you may want to head to the snow tubing park or to the ice skating rink! Lots of fun activities for the whole family! In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

So Long Summer… Welcome, Fall!

Some of our gang!
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations’ owners and employees wrapped up the summer season with their annual “End of Summer Party/ BBQ & Side Dish Cook Off”! What a fun evening! I must say that we do have some very creative culinary artists amongst us! Employees brought everything from casseroles, salads, chicken wings, ribs, and more! And then, the judging commenced. (I knew I was doomed when I didn’t even want to taste my own dish. Guess it is back to bringing soda pop & chips for me). Grand prize for the BBQ cook off went toSean, our housekeeping coordinator, for his amazing wings. Dawn, from laundry, following up with runner up for her meatballs (her dishes always win so this was not surprising!) Alicia, one of owner reps, took the Grand prize for her corn casserole; Tiffany followed as runner up for her cheesy hash brown potatoes! All in all, everyone brought some truly amazing dishes. Lots of games were played by adults & kids alike (I think that we could form one heck of a Taylor-Made Corn hole Team.. maybe even go national!) Joe, Jodi, and Chad once again showed great appreciation to their employees with lots of cool prizes and giveaways. Finally, Joe announced the winner of our company game, The Hungry Games, where employees vied for the coveted spot as being named top dog in customer service.  Gary, one of our hardworking maintenance guys, definitely had the odds ever in his favor. He took home the Grand prize, a 32 inch flat screen TV! Congrats, Gary, you definitely deserve it! Anyway, it was a wonderful gathering and a perfect way to end the summer season.
Crazy Zachary!
The feeling of fall is definitely in the air as the nights are becoming slightly brisk but the day temps have been in the mid-70s; perfect in my opinion. If you are in town this weekend, don’t forget to check out the SavageMan Triathlon, named the #1 World’s Hardest! This event, which brings athletes from all over, benefits the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation http://www.melanomaresource.org/. This wonderful charity works to help educate, prevent, detect, care, and cure melanoma.

Now, is the perfect time to get away for a relaxing and peaceful getaway.  If you are coming with your significant other, don’t forget to ask one of the reservationists @ Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations for information on our “Romance Package”. For a mere $30, you can purchase the package which consists of a $25 gift certificated to a local restaurant, a special Deep Creek memento, a $25 gift certificate to Bello’s Portraits, a gift certificate to a local beverage spot, and a free late check out if available. A wonderful deal and an excellent way to surprise your loved one! In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
