Top 8 Deep Creek Lake Winter Activities for Non-Skiers

It’s a common conundrum – what’s a non-skier to do when friends and family are hitting the slopes at Wisp Resort?  Deep Creek Lake winter activities offers lots of options that can keep every member of your crew entertained.  It’s a great way to enjoy a weekend getaway near Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or Washington, DC.

Here are just a few of our favorite activities for the non-skiers staying at a Deep Creek Lake vacation rental:

Activities for Non-Skiers

Hiking at Swallow Falls State Park
Crisp white snow makes this beautiful place even more spectacular, and it’s definitely a must see throughout all four seasons.  If you’re up for some serious hiking, explore trails to all three of the waterfalls – Swallow Falls, Muddy Creek Falls, and Tolliver Falls.  There is also a handicap accessible trail and view platform at Muddy Creek Falls for those that need an easier route or just want to take a short stroll.   Be sure to bring your camera and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.  Trails can be slippery during the winter months.  Get more info.

Guided Snowshoe Tours
Weather permitting, All Earth Eco Tours offers another great way to experience Swallow Falls State Park.   Their snowshoe tours are a “no experience required” way to cruise through the woods and take in the scenery.  For those seeking high adventure, ask about their trips to Big Savage Mountain and Lost Lands.
Sleigh Rides at Deep Creek Lake

Sleigh Rides
Take a ride back in time as you swish through open fields and over hills listening to the sound of muffled hoof beats in the snow.  Sleigh rides at Pleasant Valley Dream Rides are an ideal way to enjoy the outdoors no matter what your age.

Sled Riding at Blackwater Falls State Park
Within one hour of the Deep Creek Lake area, you’ll find the ultimate sledding hill!  Head to Blackwater Falls State Park to ride up on a conveyor, sled to the bottom, and repeat!  Bring your own sled or rent one on-site.

Cross Country Skiing
With minimal instruction, you can kick and glide on cross country ski trails at Wisp Resort, Herrington Manor State Park, and New Germany State Park.  Rental equipment is available at each location, and Wisp offers intro lessons as well.

Shops & Antiques
Avoid the cold temperatures when you visit area shops and antique stores.  Schoolhouse Earth, Bear Creek Traders, and High Mountain Sports are a few of our favorites at the lake.  Take a short drive to Oakland to browse antiques at Englander’s or Cabin Fever.

Museum Tours
While you’re in downtown Oakland, history buffs should stop at the two museums operated by the Garrett County Historical Society.  Return to the past as you explore area treasures, learn about early settlers, and check out Model T Fords.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center
Fun for kids of all ages, the Discovery Center is a one-of-a-kind environmental center with hands-on exhibits that showcase the natural resources of Western Maryland.  Children can enjoy special programs each weekend like pine cone bird feeder making or feeding some of the resident critters.

Prepping for Deep Creek Lake Summer Vacations!

Everyday seems to be a new whirl of excitement around the Taylor-Made offices. We are enjoying some amazing spring weather lately with temperatures in the low to mid-70s. Bright blue skies and lots of sunshine, almost like something out of postcard. We are very lucky.
Each department has been gearing up and prepping for guests who will soon be arriving for their Deep Creek Lake summer vacations.
Reservation Specialists have been busy helping families plan their last minute summer vacations, from finding the perfect vacation home to planning activities to do while they are staying here at Deep Creek Lake. Luckily they are all very familiar with each home, the location, and the amenities each one has to offer. As we all like to “Play where we work”, they are also very knowledgeable about the various restaurants and activities to do in the area. Best place to get fresh produce in the area? Ask, we can tell you. Aunt Bessie likes quirky, off the wall shops? Yep, we know that one too! This is what makes our Reservationists so spectacular at their jobs!
Still speaking of busy, our lawn crews have been crazy doing spring clean ups! We love it when guests pull up to our vacation rental homes and say “Awww…it feels like home!” We want our homes to look manicured and inviting and that is why our lawn crew puts so much time and energy into each job. New mulch, cleaning up debris, fresh cut; just to name of few of the many tasks they take on daily! They are greatly appreciated for their hard work.

Our Owner Reps/ Inspectors may be taking on the toughest job of any right now as they are multi-tasking the many jobs that need to get done to prepare the home for summer rentals. Hours are spent pouring over kitchen items in order to make a full inventory of what is needed for the fully stocked kitchen! Carpet cleanings are being scheduled as well as window washing! Deep cleaning throughout the entire home including all comforters and other bedding. A lot of items to keep track of for each home! It’s because they know the homes inside and out that help them pull all of this together so efficiently.

As I mentioned, a whirl wind of activities going on here at our Taylor-Made home base these days. We kind of like this way. As always, we are offering some awesome last minute discounts for your spring getaway! Visit for 3 days and stay for the price of 2 for the remaining month of May. Give us a call (1-866-351-1119 or online
www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us help you plan your next “Deep Creek Excursion”! We can’t wait to see you at the lake! #deepcreeklake #readyforsummer #familyfun

Jay, Chad, Jodi, & Joe
TMDCV made a big splash earlier this month when they announced that they were starting a Real Estate company! Yes, it’s true. We are now officially Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacation Rentals & Sales; Jay Ferguson, a local real estate agent has partnered up with Taylor-Made for this new and exciting endeavor. Jay grew up in Garrett County which gives him a vast knowledge of not only Deep Creek but the entire region as well. Jay started his career at Long & Foster Real Estate in 2000 and won the “Rookie of the Year” award. Jay’s dedication and determination was evident when he became a member of the coveted Gold Team (annual sales of 5+ million dollars) and continued this every year thereafter. In his last year at Long & Foster, he earned the Hall of Fame designation. In 2010, he moved to Railey Sales where he continued to provide outstanding service to those looking to buy or sell their homes. Recently, he earned the title of the #1 sales agent in Garrett County and the Deep Creek Lake area for the first quarter of 2014. By bringing these two companies together, our Taylor-Made team is able to provide our clients with a one stop shop for all their property service needs. Your home is on the market and a potential buyer comes into the area at the last minute. The lawn needs maintained or the interior needs a housekeeping face lift. No need to call frantically around looking for an outside vendor who is available right away. Our property service are available 7 days a week if needed. Providing the best customer service and quality that goes above and beyond is important to Jay and all of the Taylor-Made team. Jay currently resides in Oakland with his wife Jessica, daughter Kayleah, and son Noah. So, if you are considering buying or selling a home or property in our area contact Jay by calling him at 301-501-0420. Welcome aboard, Jay! We are excited to have you as part of the team!  Meanwhile, as always, we are here eagerly waiting to help you plan that perfect Deep Creek vacation. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Ramp Season is Here!

Docks are going in!
Spring has arrived! We were blessed with gorgeous weather at Deep Creek Lake over the Easter holiday and the temperatures are still rising as I type this. The trees are beginning to bud and the grass is becoming more green and lush. I’ve always been a big fan of the smell of fresh cut grass but the first time you smell it in the spring brings a sense of relief that you can hopefully pack away the winter gear and bring out the flip flops! There are a lot of activities and things to do here at Deep Creek this season and the perfect time for a quick weekend getaway. If you really want to experience some of the unique qualities of our mountainous region, then you should most definitely check out one of the many local Ramp Dinners or Ramp Festivals. If you are unfamiliar with Ramps, they are essentially wild onions that are known for their “Stink”. Ahh, yes, these small round bulbous onions are quite pungent (to smell in general and particularly when ingested). They do however have a wonderful sweet taste. Many local chefs in our area will often creatively use them to create delectable dishes. This Saturday April 26th @ The Deep Creek Discovery Center, they will be holding their 13th Annual Ramp Cook Off where the public is invited to either submit a dish for judging or just be part of the public tasting. The event begins from 11- 1pm. A panel of judges will be judging the ramps on ramp flavor, presentation, and creativity. If you are looking for a fun family activity that also gives you a glimpse into some of our local folklore, you should definitely check it out.
Ramp Season is here!
Kayaking Savage River Reservoir!

Golf is another fun activity to do if you are visiting us this spring. With numerous golf courses in our area, you certainly have your choice of where to play. For those that are staying in our Waterfront Greens Community, you also get free play of the 3 par community golf course. Plan a couple’s getaway and while half the party spends the day on the greens, the other half can schedule one of our local massage therapists to come to the house and do on-site massage therapy. So whether you are coming for specific event or just to get away, there is definitely something for everyone. Give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) and we will be more than happy to help you plan your itinerary throughout your stay. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Shopping Fun!

School House Earth décor
April showers bring Snow Showers? This past week this was apparent but being the tough Mountaineers that we are, we didn’t even bat an eye. Here it is two days later and the temperatures are rising and it appears that we are going to have another gorgeous weekend here at Deep Creek Lake. If you have no plans, give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations and we will do everything we can to find that perfect vacation home to suit you and your friends and family (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvactions.com).
We will be the first to admit that if you are wanting to go on a true shopping extravaganza (thinking malls and outlets) if you are visiting Deep Creek you may be slightly disappointed. However, if you are looking for truly unique gifts and shops, please stop by! I had the pleasure of visiting School House Earth (http://www.schoolhouseearth.com/) last week and once again reminded of what charming and captivating shop it truly is! With 3 buildings side by side, they are able to offer a tremendous variety of items. Looking for apparel, such as the latest scarves or handbags? They have it. Garden items? Kid’s toys and room decorations? Christmas décor? House signs? Specialty wine openers? Various food condiments? Yes, yes, and still yes. There is definitely something for everyone. Take the kids and let them check out the free petting zoo which houses llamas, goats, and a very friendly yellow lab pup that will kindly greet you! The staff is so warm and friendly and are more than willing to help you find that special gift you seek! I personally fell in love with the gardening section which had a wonderful selection of wreaths and wind chimes. If you are preparing for summer and thinking of sprucing up your garden area, stop here first. School House Earth is a wonderfully unique shop that is truly worth the short drive to check out. Again, don’t forget your camera, the pets are extremely photogenic (I’m pretty sure the goat was actually posing for me!)
Posing pretty

Still haven’t made plans for Memorial Day Weekend? Lake life really begins to come alive around that time. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Fun times at Art in the Park!

Kids enjoying a demonstration!

Summer season is in full swing here in the mountains.  If you happen to be in the area this weekend, I suggest you head over to Deep Creek State Park and check out the annual “Art in the Park” that is being held there this weekend. Guests can wander around the grounds to the various tents and tables to check out the work of some of our local artists. The kids may enjoy some of the various nature programs that are going on throughout the day. Silent auctions and craft demonstrations will also be enjoyed throughout the weekend. Among the various arts available, you will find jewelry, woodwork, fused glass, paintings, furniture, baskets and more. Guests can arrive by foot, car, or boat (there is a small service fee for entrance into the park). Afterwards, take the kids down to the sandy beach area and let them swim and splash around in the water. The beach area boasts a mile of sandy beach and is roped off in the water. Various picnic tables are placed around the beach area making this a perfect spot for a picnic lunch. Art in the Park is definitely a family friendly event that you should consider checking out!

Behind the Scenes Look: TMDCV Laundry Department

The processing of laundry is a critical element of the vacation experience that is often taken for granted. Check out the following behind-the-scenes look at the Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations laundry department:

In one year, Taylor-Made processes over 100,000 pounds of sheets, blankets and comforters and folds over 25,000 towels. The staff of 4 takes care of the washing, drying, folding and pressing of each piece of laundry to help prepare each home and the many beds that are made over 25,700 times in a year.

There are three 50 pound washing machines, two 75 pound dryers and a pressing machine to make up the in-house laundry department. The soiled laundry is loaded into the washer and a selection is made on the chemical station as to the amount of bleach, alkaline and/or detergent necessary for each load. Then, an hour later, the items are ready to be dried or pressed.

Chemical Guide for Wash

The flat items such as sheets and pillowcases are processed through a press that heats to 365° to automatically dry, press and fold in less than 20 seconds. The other items are put into one of the two dryers that take approximately 40 minutes to run.

Once the dryer items are complete, there team says there will often be, literally, a 10’ high cart to be folded in the afternoon.

King Bedsheets

The clean and folded items are then organized by size and type. There are folded items on selves divided into king, queen, full, and twin sheets, pillowcases, regular towels, hand towels, washcloths, and bath mats.

This process is non-stop and, depending on the season, between 16-24 loads will be completed in an 8 hour shift.

To prepare the laundry to be taken to the homes, bags are then packaged with a standard 18 towel items in each and then adjusted based on specifics for each home. Separate bags are also prepared for the remaining linens according to the number and size of beds in each home.

Each morning the staging area will be lined with numerous sets of towels and bedding for each home. The housekeepers will take the laundry to the homes and return the soiled linens back to our laundry department. Then, the process repeats again; our laundry department operates 7 days a week.

Ready for the Homes

When you take advantage of some of the amazing discounts and last minute specials we currently have, be sure to thank the ladies in the laundry department for their hard work! Call now to speak to one of our Reservationists and book your next vacation today! 866-351-1119

Gary, Gary….He’s Our Man!!

Mountain life is treating us well here in Garrett County these days. Leaves are beginning to change just in time for the much anticipated Autumn Glory Festival that is being held the 2nd weekend of October. It’s a wonderful festival that includes craft & car shows, a German “Oom Pah” festival, a Grand Feature Parade, band playoffs, the list is endless. A definite “must check out” event. Don’t forget to call us @ Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119) or look us up online @ www.deepcreekvacations.com to get some great deals on last minute reservations!
We have decided to try something a little different on our blog this month. Each month we will introduce you to a featured employee. Many of our renters have been staying with us for many years and we here at the Reservationist Department have the pleasure of getting to know them and see them when they visit. We thought it would be nice for our renters to get know the rest of our Taylor-Made Family, those that play an intricate part of our company but work more “behind the scene” so to speak.

This month, we would like to introduce you to Gary Paugh, one of our hardworking Maintenance Technicians. Gary has been with our company for the past two and half years and resides in nearby Terra Alta, West Virginia. Garywas recently named our “Hungry Games” winner (Grand Prize was 32 inch flat screen tv!! Lucky!!) . This game was designed to acknowledge employees for their stellar customer service skills whether this is a compliment from a guest or for work awarded for going above and beyond. We frequently hear from our renters that “Gary, came right out to help us. He was very polite and very helpful”. It’s no surprise to us that Gary came through as victor! We are also pleased to say that Gary is an Army Veteran having served our country for 23 years! In his spare time (which we sometimes allow him to have…) he likes to spend time hunting, fishing, and playing basketball (he also rocks at Corn Hole!!) This past year he took classes in Atlantic City and became a certified hot tub technician as well. He plans to stay with Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations for many years to come! So, this month, we give a big shout out to Gary!! You have a great sense of humor, you are always a pleasure to work with, and you do a phenomenal job. If you happen to see Gary while you are out and about, be sure to say Hello!

Mountain memories are waiting to be made! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
