|Super Fun Kids Section!|
Although the air outside was a bit chilly, the sun was shining brightly
when I decided to head out for the day into downtown Oakland. On the agenda, stopping in at the Oakland Bookmark’et and Antique Mezzanine. I am the first to admit that I am a bit of a “Book Nerd”. Even when I was little, I used to love to go inside book stores and wander aimlessly. The possibilities always seem endless. A good love story? A science fiction novel? Perhaps just a collection of random poems? I had finished my latest book about a week ago and was looking forward to something new and different. When I first walked into the shop, I was excited about the immediate warmth that enveloped me, followed by a bright and cheerful greeting from the cashier. Warm and cozy are definitely terms that come to mind inside the shop. A quick scan gave me the gist of the layout. The newest and most popular releases were prominently displayed in the front of the store. Cute little signs and plants added to the bright décor. Turning a little nook, I discovered the kids section and was in awe. Books, toys, learning displays, doll houses, and stuffed animals stretched from floor to ceiling and my inner child was thrilled! What a phenomenal place to bring the kids to let them choose a book to take home! I continued to wander around where I found the teenage section, the travel section, self-help and finally Viola! The cook book section! (Okay, just to let you in on a little secret of mine, I absolutely love cook books! The actual cooking part, I can certainly do without but I still love to read over recipes and daydream of creating fabulous feasts! )
I continued to happily wander about looking at the huge selection. Finally, I narrowed my selection down, paid for my purchases, and headed outside to embrace the fresh mountain air! An afternoon spent happily browsing and shopping in the picturesque town of Oakland. A must-do on your next visit to the area!
Speaking of Oakland and fun things to do, don’t forget about the 7th Annual Winterfest held from February 15th– February 17th. Walk through the town and see some of the amazing ice sculptures, let the kids’ play ice bowling, check out the local vendors, and don’t skimp on the hot chocolate. This held on both Saturday and Sunday from 10-6 and is a wonderful event for the whole family to enjoy. Now is the perfect time to book that last minute ski trip with your friends and family. Be sure to call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations 1-866-351-1119 or visit us online (www.deepcreekvacations.com) to find out about the latest specials and deals we are running (don’t forget we offer discounted lift tickets as well!) A familiar humming sound has been heard echoing on the mountain top lately as Wisp is eagerly trying to crank out the snow so the official ski season can begin! (Fun fact: Did you know that back in 1956, the year after Wisp first opened, Recreational Industries attempted to make snow for the first time. The machines resembled lawn sprinklers which emitted frozen pellets of water.) Of course, the snow blowers today are much more high tech.
They have a decent base of snow started and hopefully the temperatures will continue to drop in the evening allowing for the snow to be made. Hard to believe that next weekend is Wisp’s 57th birthdaycelebration! They will be offering all kinds of amazing deals on discounted lift tickets, rentals, and lessons. There will also be entertainment, games, and more birthday fun (Come on Mother Nature, cooperated with us here!) Just to think, 57 years ago, one man by the name of Mr. Helmuth Heise had a vision. What many saw as just a cow pasture, Helmuth saw a makeshift ski lift. A one room hut with a potbellied stove served as the first lodge and the bed of a pickup truck operated as the first ski rental shop. Now all of these years later, the Wisp Resort is now considered the premiere ski and golf destination in the state of Maryland. In the winter, guests flock to the area for the chance to challenge ski slopes, have a blast at the snow tubing park or enjoy some time at the newly designed ice skating rink. Throughout the rest of the year, Wisp still offers a bevy of activities from the mountain coaster that winds down the mountain, the exquisite golf course, mountain buggy tours, Disc golf, the Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour, and much, much more. Mother Nature was certainly kind to us last week by blanketing the area in lots of pretty white fluff. Wisp has almost all of their slopes open, not to mention the tubing park and ice skating rink. It is definitely a great weekend to be coming into the area. If you want to experience a true ‘Mountain Winter Escape’, then I suggest that you head to Oakland Winterfest! This is one event that I always look forward to! Held in downtown Oakland, visitors will find a true winter wonderland. Going on its 5th year, the event is sponsored by various Oakland businesses and will be held from February 17th to the 19th. What might one find at this Winterfest? The highlight of the event are the amazing and unique ice sculptures that can be viewed throughout the town. Master carver, Bill Sandusky, from Frozen Assets Ice Carving Company will be returning for his 5th year to showcase his astounding talent. Local businesses are given the opportunity to purchase a sculpture that Bill will carve, generally, in an image pertaining to the business. He will do five live carvings on Saturday and “The Tribute to Oakland” on Sunday. The displays are well lit at night and on display until they melt. For the little ones, there is a ice sculpted bowling lane, an actual slide made out of ice, and in ice throne for them to perch on. They will also be able to take home a free personalized block of ice with their name in it. Other activities that will be going on are the snowman building competition, the crowning of “SnowFlake Toddler and Princess”, various craft vendors, and horse drawn sleigh rides by Pleasant Valley Dream Rides. Various dining establishments will be offering hot soup specials throughout the weekend as well. Still unsure? Think hot chocolate! Warm beverages and snacks can also be purchased at several locations throughout the town. If you are looking for some real old fashioned family fun then I highly recommend that you head to downtown Oakland this weekend to check out this excellent event. In the meantime, snow is on the ground, perfect for snow shoeing or cross country skiing. Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations is running some great specials for next weekend, so now is the perfect time to call to reserve your dream vacation home. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake! http://www.deepcreekvacations.com/
