Calling all history buffs! The weekend of September 20th, in Grantsville MD, there will be a celebration for the Cassleman River Bridge Bicentennial. For those of you that are not familiar with the bridge, it is located along the original route of the National Road. It is a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a technological wonder of its time; it was the largest single-span bridge in America with its great stone arch. The arch spans nearly 354 feet across the Casselman River with stones laid in a random-coursed ashlar pattern. Not only is it stunning to see, but the Cassleman River Bridge State Park surrounding the bridge has picnic tables and walking trails, making it a wonderful place for a family picnic. This 3 day commemorative event will host activities around the bridge and throughout the town of Grantsville. The bridge is currently closed for renovations but will reopen for foot traffic. Some of the events that are planned are musical entertainment, historical displays and re-enactors, children’s activities, wagon rides, food, souvenirs, and much more.
