Christmas in the Village: Check Out Our Holiday Event Quick Guide

Christmas in the Village is a delightful holiday event held in nearby Grantsville, MD. The 2019 dates are December 6th from 4-8PM and December 7th from noon-8PM. Somerset Trust Co. has sponsored FREE shuttle service for the entire event. You can park at the Grantsville Elementary School (120 Grant St, Grantsville, MD 21536).

If you haven’t visited the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, this is a great chance to explore this favorite local spot. It is located in an area known as Little Crossings adjacent to Casselman River Bridge State Park.  It is a venue where skilled artisans can showcase and sell their work. Visitors have an opportunity to interact with them in their studios that are as unique as the items they create. Each studio is housed in one of thirteen restored cabins, including a one-room schoolhouse. This area also boasts an original inn dating back to 1818 – now known as Penn Alps Restaurant.

The Little Crossings area has experienced a recent revitalization. The Cornucopia Café and Grant’s Mercantile are recent additions to this riverside destination.

Christmas in the Village kicks-off on Friday evening with luminaries lighting the paths to the various artist studios. Decorated fresh greenery and twinkling lights, it will quickly get you in the mood for the holidays.

Did Someone Say “Let’s Shop?”

The other day I discovered a new shop at Deep Creek Lake. I felt a bit silly since it has been in the area for over 12 years but for some odd reason, it never occurred to me to go and check it out. Sacred Ground is located on the top floor of a large building in the heart of McHenry in the same building as The Popcorn Factory. As I started to drift upstairs, I could hear soft music playing in the background (always a nice touch) and voila! I was in a woman’s paradise! Rows of jewelry lined the wall with everything from rings, necklaces, bracelets, and more! From the name “Sacred Ground”, you can get the gist that a large portion of the jewelry was from a Southwest origin but still a large variety (I saw at least 10 pieces of jewelry that I know I must own and own asap!) I was greeted by the owner’s daughter Tiffany who was extremely sweet and displayed awesome customer service. She was very helpful and didn’t seem irritated at all by my many, many questions. She explained how her family had moved into the building 12 years prior and were actually the first tenants in the building. Her family has always had a love for the Southwest region and actually travel to Arizona and New Mexico to pick some of their merchandise directly. These also work closely with a Navajo Artist who helps design a lot of their jewelry. Walking further into the store, I noticed that they carried a lot more than just jewelry but there were candles, paintings, vases, and even clothing. Such a large selection of different items to choose from!
Love these necklaces!
Then I spotted what looked to me like just a very pretty lamp, however, Tiffany explained to me that it was actually a Himalayan Salt Lamp made of mined and carved minerals and it actually carries medicinal properties that are helpful for people with asthma and allergies! Neat! Between the beautiful music that played, the many delightful items to check out and again, the superb customer service, I knew without a doubt that I had found a new shopping venue! (Did I also mention that it was right on the lake and boasted breathtaking lake and mountain views?) We here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales we love to support our local shops and highly recommend to our friends and guests to stop in and check out Sacred Ground (grab some popcorn on your way out as well!)

There has been a lot of exciting events going on around the Taylor-Made office these days. Last week, we held a joint baby shower for 2 of our Owner Representatives.  Alicia and Shannon are both expecting their little bundles of joy to be arriving in the next month or so. What better way to help them celebrate than to host a gathering of coworkers. With more than ample room in the lower level of our main office, we created a lovely shower complete with a huge array of yummy food, punch, and of course cake! A wonderful time was had by all! We are so excited for both Alicia and Shannon and can’t wait to meet the little ones!
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations would also like to remind everyone that we are hosting the monthly Chamber of Commerce March After Hours gathering this evening from 6-8 pm. Lots of exciting happenings going on at Taylor-Made these days.  Joe, of the owners of the company, recently returned from a Regional Seminar in the Outer Banks. Last Fall, Joewas elected to be on the board of Vacation Rental Housekeeping Professionals ( It is a National Non-Profit organization that focuses on maintenance and housekeeping issues. This can range anywhere from the best supplies and chemicals to use, to inspections, to ideas that will help our staff work in the most productive and effective way. Joe is a conference committee co-chair which is responsible for putting together the location of seminars and gives input into topics that are covered at these functions. Although he learned some very helpful information to help our staff continue to strive to bring the best service to our guests, we are happy to have him back. So, welcome home Joe!

Giving a thumbs up to Lisa!

Life in the mountains continues to return to normal following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Again, we must say how very thankful we are to all of the workers, both local and those that came from out of state to help restore power, remove downed trees & power lines, and cleared roadways. You are true heroes and we appreciate all of your time and effort!

It is once again time to introduce you to one of our featured employees. This week we celebrate Lisa Yommer, our Assistant Customer Service Manager. Lisa was one of Taylor-MadeDeep Creek Vacations’ first employees, having started with the company in December 2008. Having worked in customer service previously, Lisa brought with her 5 years of experience to the Reservations Department. Once in Reservations, Lisa began to implement many important ideas into the department from developing a training program, working closely with all departments to make sure our homes are in top notch condition for our guests, resolving customer issues, and forming a fun incentive program for employees. We are very lucky to have her as part of our team and appreciate all of her hard work and dedication. On a more personal note, Lisa is a Garrett County native that currently resides in Oakland. Many of her evenings are spent at her second job where she is a manager @ Garrett 8 Cinemas! (You would think she would have some pull on getting us some free movie tickets but so far, no dice. Trust me, several of us have tried!) She is an avid Steeler Fan, often participating in heated discussions with Company owner, Chad, who is a tried and true Ravens fan. (All in good fun but definitely makes for some good teasing around the office!) She has a very social life, and enjoys shopping and dining out with her large group of friends. For company get-togethers, we can always count on Lisa to show up with smile and ready to have a good time (Sometimes, we can even talk her into bringing her extremely scrumptious and yummy Mexican Taco Dip!!) So, Hip Hip Hooray! for Lisa! You are a wonderful employee and a great friend to us all!
There is still time left for those that want to visit the area in Thanksgiving. We are running some fantastic specials (sorry not retro-active) where you can now book 3 nights for the price of 2! If you choose to book and stay in the month of November, you can now also take advantage of our tourism boost when we waive the 6% accommodation tax on all of our homes. Don’t forget that this is also our annual Festival of Trees event. Held at the Garrett County Fairgrounds, this is your chance to wander through a true winter wonderland of decorative trees, wreaths, and other festive decorations. A wonderful family festivity, bring the kids and let them enjoy breakfast and pictures with Santa Claus! Call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations today (1-866-351-1119) or visit us online @  to begin planning your next Deep Creekadventure. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Taking a look back in time…

I decided to take advantage of the spectacular Fall weather the other day by shopping and wandering through downtown Oakland. While there, I decided to pop into the Garrett County Museum since I had never been there before. What a treat! The outside of the back of the building is reconstructed to look like the old Deer Park Hotel, which was a widely popular hotel constructed in the late 1890’s. One can truly get a sense of how beautiful this hotel was back in its day.

Walking through, you obviously get a real understanding of the history of our area but what I found most fascinating was that the majority of pictures and artifacts were actually donated by the citizens of Garrett County. In one room, you can look at a model of the old B & O Railroad along with some of the original uniforms, pictures, and plaques that were in placed in the station. Interesting fact; Garrett County was actually named in honor of Mr. John W. Garrett, President of the B & O Railroad.
Other items of interest is the room that is reconstructed to look like an old Deep Creek Lake cottage and a room devoted to some of the military background of our area. As an resident of Mountain Lake Park, I was awed by the pictures of the old lake, which at the time was a popular place for those to vacation. Unfortunately it could not be salvaged and was torn down but many years ago, Mtn. Lake housed a 5000 seating Bashford Amphitheater, which William Howard Taft actually spoke at in August 1911. To see the pictures, one cannot help but be amazed at the enormity of the building and to imagine what huge crowds it must have drawn to it.
I highly recommend that you take a day and visit the museum. Make a full day of it and also visit the Transportation Museum located just down the road. Don’t forget that Farmer’s Market is still going strong throughout the month of October so visit on Wednesday and Saturday and choose from a large variety of fresh fruit, veggies, and baked goods. Stop into Dottie’s Fountain and Grill for a delicious homemade milkshake. An eclectic atmosphere combined with awesome diner food! You can’t go wrong!
The Autumn Glory Festival is quickly approaching so make sure you call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations today (1-866-351-1119) or look us up online ( for some unbeatable last minute deals. For the large multi-family getaway call and get details on one of our latest homes, Unforgettable, a true Deep Creek premiere home. This phenomenal 8 bedroom home is located in the prestigious community of Waterfront Greens and boasts a private indoor heated pool, 2 hot tubs, and lots of new updated décor including newer flat screen TVs. Trust me, your family will thank you. In the meantime, as we continue to bask in the beauty of Autumn here in the mountains, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
