Wine, anyone? Why, yes, please!

The Labor Day holiday is among us and the staff @ Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations has been busy trying to help our guests visit us by offering some outstanding last minute deals! There are a lot of fun activities going on this weekend including the annual Labor Day sales offered at Wisp, Rudy’s, and High Mountain Sports. If you are looking for some great deals on snowboards, canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, ski equipment, you name it, then you definitely want to stop by one or all of these shops!

A great big, heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone who came out last Friday to visit us for our Grand Opening! It was awesome to see so many of our homeowners, renters, and supporters from the community. Also, a shout out to Sante Fe Grille, Brenda’s Pizzeria, Dutch’sPinelodge, Trader’s Coffee House, DC’s Bar & Restaurant, & Sorellee’s for the spectacular food spread. I’m not sure who that red head was that kept making frequent trips by the stuffed mushroom caps but someone should really consider explaining the whole “gluttony is wrong” concept. The evening was a huge success and again, we really appreciate the support.
Don’t forget that next weekend, (September 7th– 9th) is the annual Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival, held at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. This is a phenomenal event that is fun for the whole family and benefits the American Red Cross. Tickets can be purchased for a mere $25. This allows you into the festival all day and covers the cost of the entry, wine tasting, and a commemorative wine glass. A bevy of activities will be going on throughout the day. Local artists and food partisans will be peddling their ware. This is an awesome change to check out their art work, from jewelry to oil paintings, wood carvings, and more. You will also be able to purchase some specialty food items from some of our local food vendors. The wine shop will open until 7 pm as well. The kids will enjoy face painting, balloon art, air brush tattoos, carriage rides, a moon bounce & much more. Don’t forget the live music that can be enjoyed throughout the day. When you call to book your home, don’t forget to ask your Reservationist for some additional information on the Art & Wine packages that we offer that hook you up with. For a small fee of $45 per person, you can get not only the entire ticket to the festival but also a $25 gift certificate towards the wine pairing at one of the local participating restaurants on Friday evening. This truly is a festival worth checking out and it goes towards a wonderful charity.

Until next time, when we begin to embrace the notion of the Autumn season (my favorite time of year… leaves changing, Autumn Glory, and let’s not forget Football Season! Go Steelers!) we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Time to Espresso Yourself!

After a busy day at the office, I decided to go for a little pick me up with a refreshing beverage from Trader’s Coffee House. So many beverages to choose from! Knowing full well that my coworkers have little patience with me when I am java-ed up, I decided to try a strawberry fruit smoothie instead. Delish! Made with real strawberries and topped with whipped cream and sprinkles, it was the perfect jolt that I needed! It had been awhile since I had been in Trader’s which is surprising because I love the atmosphere there! It’s very casual but warm and inviting and their menu just continues to grow. They now serve a variety of breakfast foods such as waffles, scones, breakfast sandwiches, and more. For lunch you can choose salad, Paninis, quiche, and the list continues. All are made daily and with nothing but fresh ingredients. Not sure what to get? Ask. The employees are quick to offer suggestions and always offer exceptional customer service. Need to surf the web? No problem as the coffee house offers wireless internet. The coffee shop is also accessible by boat so stop by next time you are out cruising on the water. So, if you are looking for a comfortable place to hang out while enjoying a specialty drink and snack, then I highly recommend that you check out Brenda and her crew at Trader’s. You will be glad that you did!

Shopping? Why, yes! I think I will!

Those of us native or local to Garrett County are well aware that we are certainly not, nor likely to become, thought of as a shopping mecca. Everyone knows if it is a shopping mall that you seek then you will head to Morgantown, Uniontown, and Cumberland. So, we are grateful for our small little unique specialty shops that are scattered throughout the area. It is usually at these cool little shops that one is most likely to find over the top customer service and truly unique collectibles! Today I journeyed to downtown Oakland to see what was going on for the day. One of the first stores that caught my attention was a shop called The Painted Cupboard! How I ever missed the store in the past is beyond me! Focusing on primitive country wares, this store is a jackpot for those that love any kind of country deco, candles, signs, beads, flowers, the list is endless! The three little showrooms give you ample room to roam about and check out all of the many different signs, from “Family Gathers Here” to “Man Cave; Enter at your own risk”! You also have a large selection of candles, scented oils, and potpourri to choose from. Sabrina, the proprietor, was very kind and also directed me to another shop they manage, across the road, called The Chic Shack. Truly a woman’s shopping paradise with a large selection of scarves, handbags, and jewelry. They have something for everyone and a great selection if you are looking for a birthday gift for a special friend or even for Mother’s Day! As always, I encourage everyone to check out the downtown area of our county seat. Make a day out of it and hit the historic museum, the antique shops and especially The Painted Cupboard and Chic Shack! I must say, I am a fan! Weather is still looking great and now is the perfect time to call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations and take advantage of our Stay 3 nights for the Price of 2 Special! In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the lake!

It’s Time to Break the Ice!

Mother Nature was certainly kind to us last week by blanketing the area in lots of pretty white fluff. Wisp has almost all of their slopes open, not to mention the tubing park and ice skating rink. It is definitely a great weekend to be coming into the area. If you want to experience a true ‘Mountain Winter Escape’, then I suggest that you head to Oakland Winterfest! This is one event that I always look forward to! Held in downtown Oakland, visitors will find a true winter wonderland. Going on its 5th year, the event is sponsored by various Oakland businesses and will be held from February 17th to the 19th. What might one find at this Winterfest? The highlight of the event are the amazing and unique ice sculptures that can be viewed throughout the town. Master carver, Bill Sandusky, from Frozen Assets Ice Carving Company will be returning for his 5th year to showcase his astounding talent. Local businesses are given the opportunity to purchase a sculpture that Bill will carve, generally, in an image pertaining to the business. He will do five live carvings on Saturday and “The Tribute to Oakland” on Sunday. The displays are well lit at night and on display until they melt. For the little ones, there is a ice sculpted bowling lane, an actual slide made out of ice, and in ice throne for them to perch on. They will also be able to take home a free personalized block of ice with their name in it. Other activities that will be going on are the snowman building competition, the crowning of “SnowFlake Toddler and Princess”, various craft vendors, and horse drawn sleigh rides by Pleasant Valley Dream Rides. Various dining establishments will be offering hot soup specials throughout the weekend as well. Still unsure? Think hot chocolate! Warm beverages and snacks can also be purchased at several locations throughout the town. If you are looking for some real old fashioned family fun then I highly recommend that you head to downtown Oakland this weekend to check out this excellent event. In the meantime, snow is on the ground, perfect for snow shoeing or cross country skiing. Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations is running some great specials for next weekend, so now is the perfect time to call to reserve your dream vacation home. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake! http://www.deepcreekvacations.com/

Just shopping for the BEAR necessities!

Entering the month of January, finds life in the mountains to be all good. Temperatures are comfortable, the snow has finally arrived (with more to come this week) and life as we know has returned to normal. I decided to reward myself for surviving the holidays with a little shopping excursion. I decided to check out Bear Creek Trader’s located in Market Fresh Square in McHenry. When I walked into the shop, I was immediately in awe of the vast selection that was before it. If you need it, it is most likely here. The store boasts a spectacular arrangement of Deep Creek memorabilia, from key chains, jewelry, totes, towels, and the list goes on. It’s also an awesome place to shop for home décor with original and unique vases, wall clocks, signs, mirrors, and more. As most of us do when we go on vacation, we tend to forget to pack something. Need ski gloves for the slopes? Forget your beach towel or sunscreen? Maybe your visiting and plan to attend a baby shower but forgot the gift (hey, it could happen). Well, worry not, Bear Creek Traders offers all of this. They have wonderful kids’ displays throughout the shop as well. There is an area where the kids can pick out an arrangement of Deep Creek Rocks to take home as a souvenir or a row of really unique kid’s toys. If your glutton for punishment and really want to sugar them up then allow the kids to carouse the old fashioned candy counter. (Temptation is a weakness of mine and I gave in and got the huge pixie straw stick. I used to love these as a kid and believe it or not, the sugar rush is equally fun as an adult!) They also have a very impressive assortment of candles and candle décor. If you stop in soon, you can also take advantage of the After-Holidays special. I saw a lot of beautiful Christmas ornaments/ decorations that were marked 50% off. So, if you’re out and about and looking to shop local with a humungous variety of items, I suggest you check out Bear Creek Traders. Otherwise, don’t forget to contact Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations for your Martin Luther King holiday getaway. The snow if fresh, the air is crisp, and we can’t wait to see you here at the lake.

Elvis has not left the building…just yet!

As I mentioned last week, I am on a new quest to conquer my Holiday shopping procrastination. I decided to once again go local, with a side of different thrown in. This brought me to The Shawnee Trading Post, located towards Oakland and approximately 10 minutes from Deep Creek Lake. I love that place! It’s certainly easy to find as the outside is randomly decorated with some very large and unique statues and fountains. These large bronze beings range from children playing to a large assortment of animals (dogs, cats, dolphins, frogs, fish, bears, the list goes on…) If this hasn’t peaked your interest then you simply must just step inside. The most obvious thing that you will see upon entering is the large man-made pond inside the door. Decorated lavishly in “garden/pond” decor, you will be warmly greeted by a beautiful school of koi fish. And then let the ‘wow’ factor begin. The store is packed full of amazing fiberglass statues/people. Elvis is in the house, along with Marilyn, James Dean, The Duke, and I believe I even caught a glimpse of Jordan there. The walls are also lined with gorgeous vases and flower pots, which in my opinion, would make an awesome gift. They also specialize in taxidermy so as you approach the back wall you will quickly become enthralled with the display of the gigantic elephant head. Scan on and check out the lion, elk, and other various animals. Most of the items in the store fall into the category of “lawn/garden decorations” but they also have amazing lamps, trunks, and country home decor. Our shopping days are quickly come to a close, so if you are like me, and still have plenty of people to cross off your list, then I highly suggest you check this store out (especially if you are a fan of all things funky, quirky, and just plain unique, like I am). In the meantime, let the temperatures drop, “Think Snow!” and we look forward to seeing you at the lake!

Trader’s Coffee House

I have been meaning to tell you about my favorite Chai Tea location in Deep Creek Lake. A must stop is Trader’s Coffee House, right below Brenda’s Pizzeria and next door to High Mtn Sports. I go there at least 3 times a week to get my morning large Chai Tea with vanilla and skim milk – which I must say beats out the bigger franchises! They also have delicious home made muffins, pastries, and many other delightful treats. They have seasonal drinks as well (which I need to try if I can forgo my Chai Tea for one day!). They even serve lunches! They have cute knick knacks to shop for and FREE wi fi as well.

Check out this wonderful shop next time you are in Deep Creek Lake!
