It Wasn’t an Accident!

The Drane House
It has been a little easier these past few days to #thinkspring since we are finally beginning to see some warmer temperatures here in our Maryland Mountains. March definitely came roaring in like a lion as just last week we were hit with another big snowstorm. Today, however, is nothing but bright blue skies and a high of 40°+, it feels like a tropical paradise (okay, so that may be a slight exaggeration but compared to those negative temps, we will happily take it & enjoy!)
I recently had an opportunity to make a few stops in Accident Maryland, a small town just a short 10 minute drive from Deep Creek Lake and one that many visiting us pass through on their way in or out of McHenry. If you haven’t been there ever or in a while, I recommend checking it out. For those history buffs, a must see stop at the historical Drane House which is thought to be the oldest standing structure in Garrett County and a key part of our Western Maryland heritage is needed. It holds significant importance due to its architectural significance that used a unique combination of log and frame structure techniques. It is suggested that you go onto their website to check time for tours of this wonderful old home. http://www.accidentmd.org/accidentmd/AroundTheTown/TheDraneHouse/tabid/62/Default.aspx.
Goodies from Firefly Farms

Your next stop is Firefly Farms off of Main Street. Here you can taste and buy their award winning goat cheeses most of which are made on-site. Artfully handcrafted and aged to precise perfection, many of Firefly’s cheeses have won numerous national and international cheese awards. The shop also features many types of wine and specialty items, basically everything you need to host a small gathering with friends or family. My personal recommendation is for the Black & Bleu goat cheese which offers a buttery and dense texture with a creamy robust flavor. Not sure which one to choose? They are very generous is allowing their patrons to taste the different varieties and then offer stellar advice on which pairs best with which wines and specialty food items. Trust me, you want to stop here.
Don’t feel like cooking but in the mood for a good old fashioned home cooked meal? Annie’s Kitchen Country Restaurant serves everything from enormous portions of subs and sandwiches to bakery items, breakfast served all day and so much more. A warm and cozy atmosphere, this relaxing little diner is well worth the stop and very friendly on the wallet. http://www.annieskitchenrestaurant.com/

We celebrated our annual Taylor-Made Holiday party last Tuesday which was a tremendous amount of fun! Our thanks go out to Angie Bosely and her crew for preparing some wonderful food and for making our office look so pretty and bright! We celebrating by once again allowing Chad, one of our company owners, to poke fun at us by sticking us his JibJab videos (always hilarious and fun!) and ended with our usual exciting game of Yankee Swap! Again, much fun was had by all and again a thanks and shout out to all that helped making it so successful!
Wisp in Preperation!

Not Just Your Ordinary Deli!

It’s always exciting when a new business or restaurant comes to your area! Don’t get me wrong, we have a wonderful selection of places to eat here at Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding area. You can choose some piping hot Brenda’s Pizzeria or maybe a steak and the famous creamy crab soup from Pine Lodge Steakhouse. The point is that we are certainly not lacking for some fine cuisine but adding another option certainly can’t hurt. When word began to spread last spring that there was going to be a new deli opening in McHenry, we were thrilled. Throw in the fact that it was owned and operated by a friend of the Taylor-Made family and we were even more excited! Owner Lora Lohr, originally from New York, said that opening Telli’s Deli just felt right. Having always been involved with food in some way, she felt that when this opportunity arrived, she knew it was too good to pass up! (Lora’s maiden name is Portelli, hence the Telli part). She wanted, “To be able to offer a different variety of foods that I like”. We apparently like the foods that she likes as well because if you haven’t had a chance to eat there yet, it’s a must! Our Taylor-Made crew has been the lucky recipient of a few catered affairs as well as ordering some of her morning bagels or sandwiches for lunch! When asked what made her food and business different from most, she stated, “Our freshness of product and quality of product are the best. Everything from our meats, cheeses, and produce are of the freshest.” They offer both breakfast and lunch and run specials daily. Fresh New York bagel breakfasts are very popular and the new egg sandwiches seem to be a favorite among locals! $8 lunch specials can’t be beat and are offered Monday through Friday.
Lora and her team now offer an array of different options whether you want to come grab lunch and dine inside the cozy shop or have them cater your next function whether it’s a holiday party or just an office gathering. They also make some incredibly wonderful gift baskets. This has become a favorite give-away of us here at Taylor-Made whether it’s for the lucky winner of one of our many contests or a gift basket we send to a homeowner, they are always very well received. Finally Lora summed up by adding that one of the keys to the success of Teli’s Deli at this time is her wonderful supportive staff. “I am very fortunate to work with some wonderful women. We all work well together, love the food industry, and just enjoy what we do. We are all mothers so we pull together to work and be flexible and accommodating with our schedules. I have a great work family!” If you are in the area, please do yourself a favor and stop and grab a bite to eat at Teli’s Deli. You will be so happy you did!
Wisp has been blowing snow lately preparing for opening day. We are still running our “Reserve 2 nights, get the 3rd night free” for another week so it’s a great time to take advantage. Give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales (1-866-351-1119 or online @ www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us help you find that dream home! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

I suspect someone did a snow dance…..

Snow has officially fallen and stuck to the ground. Prepare for Winter! No one prepares for winter quite like we do here in Garrett County Maryland. Averaging more annual snowfall than Fairbanks Alaska, we are more than prepared to tackle several feet of snow at a time! Bring out the big state trucks, the salt & cinders, plus the numerous “Little Guys” that all have plows attached to the front and we pretty much keep things well covered. The first snowfall always brings a certain amount of excitement whether it’s kids that look forward to playing in it to those that are hopeful for a school “snow day” to the winter enthusiasts that are ready to break out their skis and snowboards! Snow excitement is in the air!

Speaking of enjoying winter fun, now is the perfect time to start planning your winter getaway. Holidays are popular times to be at Deep Creek Lake so smooch up to your boss for your future days off and then call us! Ski in/ Ski out homes are very popular so if you want the best choice of which one will accommodate your group then I highly suggest that you start looking now before it’s last minute. Because we are the only ski resort in the state of Maryland and only 3 hours from Washington/ DC area, we are a quick and easy winter escape. Not big on skiing? Snow tubing is a lot of fun and requires very little skill only than to hold on! (Perfect for someone like me who can’t even stand up on skis, let alone try to glide on them…)

Maybe you don’t even need to be outdoors. Cuddle up in front of a crackling fireplace with a favorite book as you take in the breathtaking snowy mountains through the wall of windows in your mountain chalet. Awww, yes! Visions of hot chocolate, snow angels, kids learning to ski, ice skating and more are drifting through your head. The mountains are calling and you must come and play! Call us today to plan your winter playtime 1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

The Countdown is On!

Casey living his dream!
When news spread that ASCI (The Adventure Sports Center International located in McHenry, MD) was the venue for the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Champions, Deep Creek Lake was quickly engulfed with excitement and intrigue. It was embraced not only as a distinguished and honored event coming to our area but a chance for us to welcome a variety of guests to our area including those from abroad. Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales wanted to become involved and knew the best way to do so would be to sponsor an athlete. Casey Eichfeld, a two time Olympian, seemed like the perfect choice as he was familiar with Deep Creek and had previously worked at ASCI as a raft guide and kayak instructor. Whitewater rafting was 2ndnature to Casey who began paddling with his dad at the age of eighteen months. He began slalom racing at the age of 5 and by 8 years of age, Casey was the youngest solo competitor at a U.S. Whitewater Slalom National! Casey continued to pursue his goal and in 2006 he and his friend Ricky Powell teamed up together for a 2 person canoe and became members of the National Senior Team. In 2008, Casey made the Olympic Team and placed 11th in the World. To date, Casey Eichfeld is currently ranked as the top C-1 paddler in the United States! Humble by nature but living out his dream, Casey quoted, “My proudest accomplishment up to this point is having participated in two Olympics. Granted I have not met my goal of a medal yet. Sharing that Olympic experience with so many other athletes who have trained and sacrificed just as I have is incredible. That feeling really engulfs you when you walk into the Opening Ceremonies and people don’t just see your flag, but they see you as athletes who worked hard to achieve your goals.” To learn more about or to support Casey in his dream, please go to his website. http://www.caseyeichfeld.us/

Our shadowbox display!
Here we are now just 23 days shy of this epic event and the excitement in Deep Creek is definitely evident. The fact that we get to share our beloved region with so many guests from all around the world is quite a privilege. We are excited to encourage Casey and his fellow Team USA members as they all strive to do their best and to accomplish their goals. If you haven’t made plans to attend this history making event being held from September 17th– 24th, call us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us help you find the perfect home for you and guests. If you are in the area, stop by our office and check out the amazing shadow box that are very talented coworker, Chris Sevigny, made for us. It contains one of Casey’s Olympian paddles that he donated to us to use for display for a while, a photo of Team USA and a copy of our brochure with their autographs. We love it! Don’t miss out on this memorable event! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

A Taylor-Made Shout Out!!

Gary chilling with his dog Theo!
As we here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales prepare for another exciting summer season, we sometimes need to step back and acknowledge all of the hard work and dedication that our employees give in order to make that happen. Today we give a big heads up and shout out to Gary Paugh who was recently promoted to Maintenance Supervisor. Gary is a retired Army Veteran who proudly served our country for 23 years! He came to the Taylor-Made family on April 12, 2010 and has continued to “WOW!” since then. Under this new title and responsibility, Gary will oversee the other maintenance technicians. One of his top priority duties will be seeing to the completion of what we call “Service Orders”. What does this mean? A good example would be that our inspectors are out preparing their homes for a guest’s arrival and they notice that the outdoor porch light is out but a ladder is required. They call this in and it is entered in as a “Service Order” to be completed before the arrival. Gary helps to follow up with the assigned technician to make sure this is completed. Is there something in the house that requires a special order or part? Gary is our “Go To” on finding the long term solution or repair. His helpful demeanor and pleasant attitude makes him easily approachable for help or just to work with in general. Gary has won many “Customer Service” games and awards that Taylor-Made has had over the past several years including being named the winner of our summer “Hunger Games” challenge 2012 in which he won the grand prize of a 32 inch flat screen TV! Gary’s goals with Taylor-Made are long term as he believes he will eventually retire from here. When asked what his favorite thing is about working at Taylor-Made, Gary will tell you that he enjoys working for a family oriented company and that he gets along very well with all of his co-workers. His job changes day to day and he is able to keep busy which makes coming to work every day a new adventure. So, a big Thank You to Gary for all that you do for us! We are so lucky to have you and Congrats on your new position as Maintenance Supervisor!
Beautiful Day @ The Lake!
Gorgeous weather here at Deep Creek Lake over the past few weekends makes now the perfect time to get in that last minute trip before summer officially kicks off. Go online or call us here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales (www.deepcreekvacations.com or 1-866-351-1119!) and let us help you find that perfect Deep Creek home! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

More than a mere toy….

WOW!

We have been busy here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales getting ready for another exciting and busy summer season. Our house inspectors have been spending extra time in the homes making sure that deep cleans are being done, lawns are manicured, grills are ready, basically ensuring that the home is in tip top shape for our summer guests. All of our docks are in so if you are able to sneak away for a quick trip, now is the perfect time to do so! Don’t forget that we are the experts when it comes to helping you find that perfect Deep Creek or Vacation home! Give us a call at 1-866-351-1119 or go online at www.deepcreekvacations.com.
Taylor-Made recently obtained a new “toy” that is causing a great deal of excitement! When I first heard that we were anxiously awaiting the arrival of our new Phantom 2 Vision, I was less than impressed. It sounded like some geeky tech toy that didn’t pertain to me. However, when it did show up, my thoughts changed quickly. This “Drone” is essentially a jazzy remote control airplane but much more technically advanced. Did I mention that it also looks really cool (It has lights that blink around the bottom!)? With 4 propellers it can quickly take flight. This is when you take advantage of the new built in HD video camera! Here you are able to take some amazing videos or still shots. You have found the perfect Deep Creek home but are curious about how close your neighbors are or what kind of distance you have to reach your lake access dock slip? Now we can provide you with that video option. When you stop in to see Jay about helping you buy your Deep Creek home he can give all of this additional information! (Just a reminder, Jay Ferguson is our Taylor-Made Deep Vacations & Sales realtor and your “go to” when it comes to buying or selling property in Garrett County!) We recently were able to take the drone up to ASCI (The Adventure Sports Center International and the venue for the ICF Canoe/ Slalom World Championships!) to video Team USA practicing on the course. I have included some photos that were recently taken by our Phantom 2 Vision and the results are pretty amazing! Now, I understand the excitement!

Gorgeous Spring Day!
Tall Castle!

Don’t forget that next weekend is the McHenry Highland Festival of Mountain Maryland! Come took base with Scottish Roots for this family friendly festival held on Saturday the 7th at the Fairgrounds! A great time to experience the lake and one of our annual festivals! http://www.highlandfest.info/index.html. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Deep Creek welcomes your Furry Friends!

Layla posing for a treat!

One of the most frequently requested amenities that our guests request is that their vacation home be pet-friendly. Face it, when you are leaving for vacation, you hate the notion that your poor little Fluffy (yes, in my family, we lacked originality when it came to naming our pets; we once had a Guinea Pig named “Pig” ) is stuck in some cage at the shelter. Besides, isn’t he or she part of the family? Don’t they deserve to breathe in fresh mountain air and swim in the lake? Of course! So yes, many of our homes do allow pets (for an additional fee). Deep Creek is actually a very “Pet Friendly” place to bring your furry friends. Many of our state parks allow pets (on a leash, of course) so you can spend the day hiking and enjoying nature. Does your pet friendly home have a dock? Hot summer days spent in the lake are a favorite activity to be enjoyed by all including the Fluffies of the world! There are also some dining establishments in the area that allow you to sit on the patio and dine with your pets.

Buddy love kayaking!
We have a large variety of pet-friendly homes to choose from as well. For the couple’s retreat, our one bedroom lakefront cottage, Skipping Stones, is a perfect choice. It has a nice big yard and a private dock, 2 things that we know for a fact, dogs love! Need a bigger home? American Pride, is an awesome 5 bedroom home located in the prestigious community of Blakeslee. Blakeslee is known for its wonderful walking trails that wind around the lake, an absolute haven for pets and pet owners.

Spring @ Deep Creek
Hate the thought of leaving your furry “Kids” at home? We here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations completely understand (stop into our office on a given day and say “Hello” to one of our mascots, Layla or Poe). We will do our best to help you find the perfect vacation home for you and your pet. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, skiing is prime, and we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Deep Creek Dunk~ Do you dare?

Flip flop daydreams!
It appears that we may be getting some warmer temperatures here at Deep Creek Lake this weekend with a high in the 50° realm. A universal “Yay” is being shouted, I’m sure. Living in the mountains of Maryland, we are used to an abundance of snow and colder temps and we take it like champs. However, this is about the time that we all begin to have flip flop daydreams or at least some hope of seeing some color other than white. The timing is perfect since this weekend is the 16th Annual MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk! This is such a wonderful cause to support as it helps the Special Olympics of Maryland! People gather donations and rally together to “Dunk” themselves into the icy and frigid waters of Deep Creek Lake! The proceeds of the event go towards helping individuals with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in year round Olympic type sports. This allows them to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

The Dunk activities actually start tomorrow (February 21st) with a kickoff celebration at The Honi-Honi Bar with “Goosebumps and Grapes; An Evening of Fire & Wine” From 6-9 pm, with a $20 donation (to the Special Olympics) you can gather around the large bonfire and taste a variety of wines. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun and again the proceeds go to a great cause. On Saturday, Dunkers and spectators will gather at Uno’s & The Honi-Honi for an afternoon of entertainment, fun, food, and prizes. Over 18 inches of ice was cut out of the water this year so it’s definitely going to be entertaining to watch the waves of dunkers go in and out. People usually get very creative and the costumes can be a hilarious sight to see! The evening concludes with a Post Dunk Bash held at Black Bear Tavern where there will be live entertainment. If you are unable to attend but would still like to donate, please go the website and do so. http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/ccp.asp?ievent=1082163&lis=1&kntae1082163=023CA77D85254206842D7DC272549DD3&ccp=650747

Brody ruling the slopes!
Otherwise, the skiing conditions continue to be awesome and there is still time to take advantage of our “Stay 3 nights for the price of 2!” discount we have going on for some of our participating properties. Give us a call and let us know what you are looking for in a vacation home and we will do our best to find something that works for you (www.deepcreekvacations.com or call 1-866-351-1119). In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake.
