The local kids in our area recently returned to school this week along with many other counties here in Western Maryland. Seems too early for school but at least we have another weekend to squeeze in some summer fun before Labor Day arrives. If you are visiting our area for the week, don’t forget to stop by the Farmer’s Market in downtown Oakland on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am – 1pm. So many great choices of fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods and more. Because every vendor doesn’t come every week (although most do), you always get a variety of different tables. There was a vendor from Pennsylvania there on Wednesday that was pedaling some stunning pottery pieces. Candles, handmade carved wooden crafts, quilts, and list goes on. It’s also a great chance to check out some of the neat shops in Oakland like the Book Market & Antique Mezzanine which offers everything from the latest best sellers to a large selection of kid’s books and toys. The back of the store showcases some amazing antiques for sell. Definitely a neat store and worth the stop! It’s a perfect time to capture some of the charm of our small town flair.
If you haven’t made your plans for Labor Day yet, I suggest that you call now as our availability is starting to become limited. It’s one last chance to make unforgettable summer memories and I can think of no place better to do this than here at Deep Creek Lake. Imagine you and your family spending the weekend boating and water tubing on the water. Rent a jet ski for an early morning romp around the McHenry cove or maybe a relaxing kayak trip is just what you need. For the outdoor adventurers, hiking and mountain biking are great options especially if you head to one of the many state parks in the area. Swallow Falls State Park showcases the largest free fall standing waterfall in the state of Maryland and is absolutely breathtaking to see. Wisp Resort offers a bevy of fun activities whether you choose to zip line down the mountain, ride the mountain coaster, play a friendly game of disc golf, and so much more. Only 3 ½ hours from the Washington D.C. / Baltimore area and 2 ½ from Pittsburgh, it’s a relatively short drive. Give us a call today (1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com ) and let us help you find the perfect vacation home for your next Deep Creek stay. Lakefront homes are going fast so make sure you call today! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations& Sales has been overly busy lately both in the office and out. Company employees and owners recently returned from two national conferences both of which are known to be the biggest and most influential in the vacation rental industry.
The first conference the company attended was the Vacation Rental Managers Association (VRMA) Annual Conference held Oct. 26 through the 29th in San Diego, California.
“The VRMA Annual Conference is the largest gathering for the professionally managed vacation rental industry,” co-owner Jodi Refosco said. “Our participation at the Annual Conference proves our dedication to growing along with the industry, finding the very best way to serve our guests and owners, and always staying on or above the cutting-edge of industry trends.”
More than 1000 leading vacation rental industry professionals attended this year’s Annual Conference, which provides an unparalleled avenue for the vacation rental industry’s top influencers to exchange information and ideas through four days of educational sessions, networking opportunities and a tradeshow. This year’s VRMA Annual Conference was the largest event in the professionally managed vacation rental industry history.
Jodi went on to say, “This year we took our largest group yet with over 10 employees and owners attending. With such a large array of classes and seminars being offered we wanted to make sure that we had someone from every department present.” Several of those from Taylor-Made also had the honor of presenting a session while there and Jodi was once again reelected to serve on the VRMA Board of Directors.
Of course, all work and no play makes for a boring trip so the group was able to fit in some play time. We took an amazing tour of U.S. Midway a Navy Aircraft Carrier. (Not a good thing for those that are claustrophobic! or tall for that matter; Poor Joe!) We also got to spend a fun filled night with all VRMA attendees at The Wave House, which basically is just what it sounds like. One side of the park has the professional wave pool for those that know what they are doing and the other half is the training park for those that don’t. There were some causalities, I’m not going to lie but fortunately for me, I have video of it! (haha!) We also got to eat at some fantastic restaurants and basically just socialize with new and old acquaintances and friends.

TMDCVS employees and owners then left for Charleston, South Carolina for the Vacation Rental Housekeeping Professionals National Conference held November 10th-12th. Joe Refosco, President of the Board of VRHP, stated, “We were very pleased with this year’s outcome. Our membership grew to over 500 members. At the conference we were able to provide 8-9 informative sessions and several roundtables. We believe in creating the best housekeeping team we can and trading ideas with our peers is the way to do it.”

Aawww! December and the 25 day countdown begins! 25 days of Christmasmusic, Christmas movies, enticing shopping offers, Christmas goodies (and proof positive that I have very little will power when it comes to saying No to all things homemade and yummy!) and let us not forget the Christmas parties and activities! What a fun month to enjoy here at Deep Creek Lake!
A familiar humming sound has been heard echoing on the mountain top lately as Wisp is eagerly trying to crank out the snow so the official ski season can begin! (Fun fact: Did you know that back in 1956, the year after Wisp first opened, Recreational Industries attempted to make snow for the first time. The machines resembled lawn sprinklers which emitted frozen pellets of water.) Of course, the snow blowers today are much more high tech.
They have a decent base of snow started and hopefully the temperatures will continue to drop in the evening allowing for the snow to be made. Hard to believe that next weekend is Wisp’s 57th birthdaycelebration! They will be offering all kinds of amazing deals on discounted lift tickets, rentals, and lessons. There will also be entertainment, games, and more birthday fun (Come on Mother Nature, cooperated with us here!) Just to think, 57 years ago, one man by the name of Mr. Helmuth Heise had a vision. What many saw as just a cow pasture, Helmuth saw a makeshift ski lift. A one room hut with a potbellied stove served as the first lodge and the bed of a pickup truck operated as the first ski rental shop. Now all of these years later, the Wisp Resort is now considered the premiere ski and golf destination in the state of Maryland. In the winter, guests flock to the area for the chance to challenge ski slopes, have a blast at the snow tubing park or enjoy some time at the newly designed ice skating rink. Throughout the rest of the year, Wisp still offers a bevy of activities from the mountain coaster that winds down the mountain, the exquisite golf course, Disc golf, the Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour, and much, much more. We are still offering some fantastic last minute discounts for most of our homes, so gather you friends and family and give us a call here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com). It’s a fun filled weekend that you definitely don’t want to miss.

It’s the day after Thanksgiving. You are stuffed, have had your fix of football, and now what? Well, if you are a bargain shopper and competitive by nature, than Black Friday shopping is always an option. However, if you are visiting Deep Creek Lake over the holiday and looking for something a little more “family friendly” and less sportsman-like, than I highly recommend you check out Garrett County’s annual Festival of Trees event. An event that benefits our local Dove Center (http://www.garrettdovecenter.org/), guests of the event get the unique opportunity to stroll through exquisitely decorated Holiday trees, wreaths, swags, table decor, and gingerbread houses! A magical walk through a true winter wonderland, if you will. Events held throughout the festival include breakfast with Santa Claus, unique arts & crafts, a live and silent auction, and Kris Kringle karaoke (sponsored, of course, by our very own local DJ talent Johny Rock (ttp://www.jonnyrock.com/) I also heard that Jennifer Christophel from Western Maryland Dance and Jessica’s Dance Creations will also be present. Hmm, still not sure? Did I mention that Lakeside Creamery would be there to help you create your own sundae(http://lakesidecreamery.com/)! and a sale of homemade bakery goods is also available?
This is truly a chance to shop for some unique, extremely cool, Deep Creek Lake mementos for family and friends. Again, mentioning that all proceeds benefit a very worthwhile and truly notable charity, The Garrett Dove Center! Please schedule a day of good old fashioned family fun and check out a new tradition with a visit to this festival! Please check out their website for a full listing of the event’s full agenda.
