Walking in a Winter Wonderland….

Our Gigantic Christmas Tree!

It’s finally beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Mother Nature has been rather fickle for the majority of December often giving us warm days up into the 60s. This week, however, is more typical of Garrett County. We thought “Snow” and here it is fluttering to the ground as I type this. This month has been a busy one here at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations. We started off the month with our annual charity drive. This year we chose to send care packages to soldiers that are stationed overseas. We chose 3 different soldiers and sent items according to what they specifically asked for. Popular requests were snack foods, baby wipes, chap stick, foot powder, hygiene products and more. All in all we gathered approximately $700 worth of goods that were shipped. So, this is big shout out and thank you to my coworkers who used stellar teamwork to get these out in time for the holidays. You guys are the best!

Who’s the lucky winner?

We then continued the holiday cheer with our annual Holiday party! I must admit, no one knows how to celebrate quite like the crew at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations! Because we now have the space with are new, bigger office, we held the party here. Angie Bosley and her crew did a remarkable job of catering the party. They had our main Great Room elegantly decorated in gorgeous hues of red and gold and accented with lots of lights. The food was absolutely delicious (her meatballs are to die for!!) So, a big thank you to Angie and her help for the fabulous food and display. We continued our tradition with our “Yankee Swap” where everyone vied for various gift cards and crafts. I came away with a gift certificate to McHenry Beverage, which will come in handy with some bubbly for New Years. Another thank you also goes out to Joe, Jodi, and Chad for once again being so thoughtful to your employees and hosting a wonderful party.
If you are going to be in the area this Monday, December 24th, please stop by our office. Santa Claus will be here from 10 am- 12 noon where he will be reading Christmas stories to the little kids. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served as well. Bring a camera, the family, and come visit us! It’s going to be a great time and we would love to see you!

Wisp Resort is currently cranking out the snow so it’s a great time to call in and begin planning your winter getaway. As usual, we are offering some great specials and don’t forget about our “Ski Free Stay Free Package” where you stay and ski for 3 nights for the price of 2. Call and speak to one of our reservationist (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) about this and the other great packages we are offering.
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations would like to take this time to wish our friends, homeowners, and guests a truly wonderful and safe holiday season! We will see you at the lake!

Let The Shopping Commence!

I am a Christmas shopping procrastinator. It’s not that I don’t love giving gifts because I do, I am just not a big fan of crowded malls and large stores. I have finally come to a no-brainer solution. Shop Local! We have so many great little shops here in Garrett County that it seems silly that I wouldn’t frequent them more often. By far, one of my very favorite shops is Four All Seasons Gift Shop located in the Dry Dock Plaza at Deep Creek Lake. Whether you are looking for a fun and funky new toy for the kids, a new amazing handbag for mom, or even football memorabilia, this shop definitely has something for everyone. Unfortunately, the shop will be closing its doors for good very soon but in the meantime, everything in the store is marked way down and with an extra 40% off everything, it’s a deal that can’t be beat. So, I headed there first. Considering the countdown had begun, the pressure to start marking names off my list was on. An hour later, I started to feel a little victorious at all of the awesome deals I had found.

40% off everything!

Arms laden with my many packages, I decided to check out The Christmas Chalet located across from Uno’s next. http://www.christmaschalet.com/ Ebenezer Scrooge could not walk in there and not immediately get in the spirit of the holiday. Tons of brightly colored Christmas trees and decorations beautifully illuminated as far as the eyes could see! There is an ornament for absolutely everyone on your list! Dog and cat lovers, dancers, teddy bears, s’mores, sports fanatics, whatever you are looking for its most likely in there. After carefully choosing some awesome Steeler Christmas tree bulbs, a yummy cinnamon/ apple candle and some other odds and ends, I left very content with my purchases. Exhausted from all of my mad spending, I made a quick dash into Trader’s Coffee House for a rejuvenating cappuccino. Yep, I have to say that local shopping is definitely the way to go!

WVU Mountaineer Fan? No problem!

A Taylor-Made Thanksgiving!

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations celebrated Thanksgiving a day early with a company feast held at our main office. Rita provided the main course with a big old 22 lb. turkey. Other goodies were mashed potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes, fresh homemade rolls, and tons more. Oh, desserts!  Did I mention that there were lots and lots of yummy deserts! My coworkers can really cook! I am beginning to think that after this weekend, that membership to Deep Creek Fitness that I mentioned previously is now inevitable. Well worth it though, I must say!

Time to Get Pumped!

I will be the first to admit that I am not fond of exercise. Raising 2 young boys that often force me into lively Dance Party marathons, trampoline contortionist acts, corn~ hole tournaments, and basically all things that leave me winded, makes me feel that I get plenty of movement. However, when it was announced that Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations was going to be working with Deep Creek Fitness and they invited us to come check them out, I was intrigued. I decided to stop in the other day to scope out the place. When I walked in, I was immediately warmly welcomed by the girls behind the counter. Nina, one of the personal trainers and manager, introduced herself to me and then began to show me around and tell me about some of the services they offer. She explained that the staff is always willing to work with the guests, either showing them how to properly use the equipment or even devising the best workout plan that suits the individual. Guests can also choose to seek the help of a personal trainer for an additional fee. This is where Nina would come in. She explained that she can help devise not only a workout plan but help develop a nutritional guideline as well. They offer lots of group classes as well such as spinning, zumba, yoga, and more. They will soon be offering a new class called BodyPump, which is a 60 minute workout that uses a platform, a bar and a selection of weights. She then showed me the group workout room where individual can also use for biking, stretching, or whatever they may want to work on at that time. Hmmm, so my interest is now piqued. As a group, I believe that many of our coworkers are going to start going together in the near future. This will also give all of us a more personal experience of the facility. Taylor-Made is hoping to soon convince more of our homeowners to purchase the 3 month membership for our renters to use when they stay in the home. We understand that many people have a certain routine and even though they are on vacation, they want to continue with their daily fitness regime. This would give them a chance to do that in a state of the art gym. So, many thanks to Nina for kindly showing me around. I think there is an excellent chance you may see me in the near future.
Be sure to check out Deep Creek Fitness on their website for more information (www.deepcreekvacations.com

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations still has some homes open for the Thanksgiving holiday so call now to take advantage of our “Stay 3 nights for the price of 2!” special that we are offering. Also, this is a good time to start planning your ski getaway for Martin Luther King and President’s Day weekend. In meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

And Along Came Sandy….

While many children and parents were planning their Halloween costumes and stocking up on candy to dispense for Trick or Treating, Garrett Countians were digging out toboggans, mittens, and various winter gear. Candy was replaced instead with ice melt and snow shovels. Hurricane Sandy swept up the East coast earlier this week and blazed quite a trail through our majestic mountains. Over 3 feet of snow fell on the region leaving many with downed trees, electric lines, and without power. Crews from various states have swept in to help and although the clean-up is going to take a while, we feel optimistic that life will return to normal before we know it. A great big huge thank you to the many, many road crews, power workers, and anyone, in general that came and offered their services. Your long hours and tireless effort is greatly appreciated.

On a positive note, the snow enthusiasts are ecstatic over the thought of Wisp Resort opening soon and for the ski season to officially start. We haven’t officially gotten any updates on when they expect the opening day to be but we will definitely keep you posted. Also, remember that to call us at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) to begin planning your ski getaway. We are once again working with Wisp Resort to offer our guests our “Ski Free/ Stay Free” package. It’s an awesome deal where you can stay and ski 3 nights for the price of 2! We still have some homes available for the Thanksgiving holiday so gather the family and join us in the mountains for a little R & R! If you are in the area over Thanksgiving, I always like to remind our guests about the Festival of Trees, held at the exhibition hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds, on November 23rdand 24th. Guests can stroll through designer decorated trees, wreaths, centerpieces, and more. Local artisans are on-site for your shopping pleasure. The kids will enjoy having breakfast with Santa, visiting Frosty’s Funland, or get some yummy baked goods from Santa’s Bakery. Adults will also enjoy the Silent Auction that is held on Saturday. It’s definitely a fun family event that is very much worth checking out. http://www.fotgc.com/  Pack up your winter wear, grab a sled, and come enjoy the snow with us. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

A Lunch Date and Birthday Wishes!

It’s hard to believe that we are already heading into the month of November. It’s sad to see October leave as it is by far my favorite month. How can you not love a month that brings brilliant hues of orange, red, and yellow covering the mountaintop? A month that brings Fall Festivals, Apple Butter, Football, and ends with Halloween and lots and lots of candy? It’s also a fabulous birthday month as well. Now, granted, my opinion is a little skewed and biased due to the fact that we share the same DNA, but October is the month of my firstborn son, Devin’s birthday. This year, we decided to enjoy lunch out together with lakeside dining at Uno’s Chicago Grill. Due to the slightly chilly air, we choose to eat inside but were still awarded with a table by the window that offers fantastic lake views. We decided to split some appetizers so we went with the ultimate nachos and pizza skins. I hate to think of the calories consumed but it was so well worth it. Since the damage was apparently already done, we also split the Reese Cup sundae for dessert. Heavenly! Afterwards, we walked down by the water for some photos. We really had an enjoyable afternoon together. I also like to recommend Uno’s for our guests that are visiting in summer because of the convenience of coming by boat but they also offer a lot of specials throughout the other seasons which they combine to work with The Honi Honi bar located next door. They will once again be kicking off the holiday season with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony held on November 24th @ 7 pm. Bring the kids for pictures with Santa, live entertainment, Christmas carols and free hot chocolate! If you haven’t booked your vacation home for the Thanksgiving holiday, now is definitely the time to call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or online www.deepcreekvacations.com) to make sure that you get the home that best suits you and your guests.
As I mentioned earlier, October is an awesome birthday month so we would like to give a Birthday shout out to some of our staff this month! Birthday wishes go out to Linda Winters, one of our beloved hardworking ladies from Housekeeping! From our Reservation’s Department, we give a birthday hooray shout to both Lisa Yommer and Stefany Glotfelty. We are so lucky to have you ladies as part of our team here @ Taylor-Made and we send you heartfelt wishes for a superb birthday!  Ski season is just around the corner so start making your Deep Creek vacation plans right away. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Fall into Action…

Our Autumn Glory Festival is in full swing this weekend. For those that are in the area, Mother Nature has decided to be kind and bestow lots of sunshine on the area today. Craft and Antique shows are going on all weekend along with a vintage car show in downtown tomorrow. If you were unable to come, fret not! There are still a lot of fun Fall festivities going on throughout the rest of the month.
Deep Creek Discovery Center located at Deep Creek State Park is offering Scavenger Hunts for children throughout the day on Friday (both on October 20th& October 26th). There is a scheduled Nature Hike for Children to check out the magnificent fall colors and to make a craft on Sunday the 21st. It’s definitely a neat family activity for the whole family to enjoy. You can also pick up a state park guide trail while you were there in case you were interested in some mountain hiking and or biking while you are visiting.
Wisp Resort is once again inviting the public to come visit their Spooky Haunted Mountain Coaster and Haunted Shack. If you are able to survive your tour of the haunted shack, where you encounter lots of thrilling props, scenes, and characters, then you are awarded with a spine chilling ride down the haunted mountain coaster. For those that are “Wimpy” (like myself!) the light scare begins at dusk each evening with a full nightmare beginning one hour after dusk. Contact Wisp Resort (www.wispresort.com or call 1-301-387-4000) for complete details. It will definitely get you in the Halloween mood!
The leaves are still peaking so now is a great time to come and visit. Scenic and historic Route 40 located close by is an awesome road to take if you are in the mood to “leaf peep” As always, a visit into McHenry will offer you phenomenal lake views accompanied with our spectacular fall foliage. Quiet serene mornings and evenings offer the perfect opportunity to rent a kayak or canoe and head out on the lake. Ask your Reservationist @ Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (www.deepcreekvacations.com or call 1-866-351-119) for a list of vendors and businesses in the area that can offer these services to you and your guests. We are still offering some fantastic deals right now where you can call book 3 nights for the price of 2! As the weather continues to get colder, now is also the time to begin planning your next ski getaway. Deep Creek Lake is definitely the place to be! We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

Taking a look back in time…

I decided to take advantage of the spectacular Fall weather the other day by shopping and wandering through downtown Oakland. While there, I decided to pop into the Garrett County Museum since I had never been there before. What a treat! The outside of the back of the building is reconstructed to look like the old Deer Park Hotel, which was a widely popular hotel constructed in the late 1890’s. One can truly get a sense of how beautiful this hotel was back in its day.

Walking through, you obviously get a real understanding of the history of our area but what I found most fascinating was that the majority of pictures and artifacts were actually donated by the citizens of Garrett County. In one room, you can look at a model of the old B & O Railroad along with some of the original uniforms, pictures, and plaques that were in placed in the station. Interesting fact; Garrett County was actually named in honor of Mr. John W. Garrett, President of the B & O Railroad.
Other items of interest is the room that is reconstructed to look like an old Deep Creek Lake cottage and a room devoted to some of the military background of our area. As an resident of Mountain Lake Park, I was awed by the pictures of the old lake, which at the time was a popular place for those to vacation. Unfortunately it could not be salvaged and was torn down but many years ago, Mtn. Lake housed a 5000 seating Bashford Amphitheater, which William Howard Taft actually spoke at in August 1911. To see the pictures, one cannot help but be amazed at the enormity of the building and to imagine what huge crowds it must have drawn to it.
I highly recommend that you take a day and visit the museum. Make a full day of it and also visit the Transportation Museum located just down the road. Don’t forget that Farmer’s Market is still going strong throughout the month of October so visit on Wednesday and Saturday and choose from a large variety of fresh fruit, veggies, and baked goods. Stop into Dottie’s Fountain and Grill for a delicious homemade milkshake. An eclectic atmosphere combined with awesome diner food! You can’t go wrong!
The Autumn Glory Festival is quickly approaching so make sure you call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations today (1-866-351-1119) or look us up online (www.deepcreekvacations.com) for some unbeatable last minute deals. For the large multi-family getaway call and get details on one of our latest homes, Unforgettable, a true Deep Creek premiere home. This phenomenal 8 bedroom home is located in the prestigious community of Waterfront Greens and boasts a private indoor heated pool, 2 hot tubs, and lots of new updated décor including newer flat screen TVs. Trust me, your family will thank you. In the meantime, as we continue to bask in the beauty of Autumn here in the mountains, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

The fun starts now….

Funland. Even the name is fun to say. Funland, a family fun center located in McHenry, has been around for as long as I can remember. Open during the warmer months, it is the perfect place for the family to enjoy of bevy of activities. We usually pack the kids in the car and enjoy a full day of fun. I tend to get a little competitive so we generally start with a game of mini-putt putt on their 18 hole miniature golf course. Obstacles include everything from swinging windmills, bridges, and even a rock waterfall. After I have successfully won, we usually head into the arcade. While my boys are fans of the racing car/ motorcycle games, I am more of an old school skee ball girl myself. Other fun activities include the large climbing wall, go karts, bumper cars, and the carousel. You can take a break somewhere in between and go to Deep Creek Pizza located next door. They have awesome pizza, wedgies, and don’t forget the Hershey’s hand dipped ice cream! Can you say “Yum”? It’s definitely a cool place for kids and adults alike! Stop by and check them out the next time you are in the area.

The feeling of Fall is definitely upon us as the temperatures are dropping and the leaves are already beginning to change. We are still running some fabulous specials so now is the time to call the Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations office (www.deepcreekvacations.com) and speak to one of our reservationist about our “Stay 3 nights for the price of 2” deal! (1-866-351-1119) Now that the lake has calmed down, it would the perfect time to rent a boat from one of our local marinas. Take a relaxing ride around the lake and check out the exquisite scenery our area offers. If you don’t want to rent a boat, High Mountain Sports (www.highmountainsports.com) and Wisp Resort (www.wispresort.com) offer guided boat tours. Also, don’t forget that next month is our annual Autumn Glory festival, which features Octoberfest, the German festival known as “Oom Pah” and a grand feature parade that was named by MSN as one of the top fall festival’s in the world. A definite “must go” event. Call today to reserve your vacation home and mark your calendar for this exciting event. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!

So Long Summer… Welcome, Fall!

Some of our gang!
Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations’ owners and employees wrapped up the summer season with their annual “End of Summer Party/ BBQ & Side Dish Cook Off”! What a fun evening! I must say that we do have some very creative culinary artists amongst us! Employees brought everything from casseroles, salads, chicken wings, ribs, and more! And then, the judging commenced. (I knew I was doomed when I didn’t even want to taste my own dish. Guess it is back to bringing soda pop & chips for me). Grand prize for the BBQ cook off went toSean, our housekeeping coordinator, for his amazing wings. Dawn, from laundry, following up with runner up for her meatballs (her dishes always win so this was not surprising!) Alicia, one of owner reps, took the Grand prize for her corn casserole; Tiffany followed as runner up for her cheesy hash brown potatoes! All in all, everyone brought some truly amazing dishes. Lots of games were played by adults & kids alike (I think that we could form one heck of a Taylor-Made Corn hole Team.. maybe even go national!) Joe, Jodi, and Chad once again showed great appreciation to their employees with lots of cool prizes and giveaways. Finally, Joe announced the winner of our company game, The Hungry Games, where employees vied for the coveted spot as being named top dog in customer service.  Gary, one of our hardworking maintenance guys, definitely had the odds ever in his favor. He took home the Grand prize, a 32 inch flat screen TV! Congrats, Gary, you definitely deserve it! Anyway, it was a wonderful gathering and a perfect way to end the summer season.
Crazy Zachary!
The feeling of fall is definitely in the air as the nights are becoming slightly brisk but the day temps have been in the mid-70s; perfect in my opinion. If you are in town this weekend, don’t forget to check out the SavageMan Triathlon, named the #1 World’s Hardest! This event, which brings athletes from all over, benefits the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation http://www.melanomaresource.org/. This wonderful charity works to help educate, prevent, detect, care, and cure melanoma.

Now, is the perfect time to get away for a relaxing and peaceful getaway.  If you are coming with your significant other, don’t forget to ask one of the reservationists @ Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations for information on our “Romance Package”. For a mere $30, you can purchase the package which consists of a $25 gift certificated to a local restaurant, a special Deep Creek memento, a $25 gift certificate to Bello’s Portraits, a gift certificate to a local beverage spot, and a free late check out if available. A wonderful deal and an excellent way to surprise your loved one! In the meantime, we can’t wait to see you at the lake!
