|Dawn & her hubby!
Pride & dedication are 2 words that automatically come to mind when I think of our featured employee of the month for January, our very own Mrs. Dawn Kight! Now, one may think that my opinion is slightly askew as I happen to think that Dawn is possibly one of the sweetest and kindest ladies I know. This makes me proud to call her my friend. Her strong work ethic and her willingness to always step in and offer a helping hand makes me proud to call her my coworker. Dawn started working with Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacationstheir first winter in 2008. She began in housekeeping where she often received positive compliments on her stellar work and attention to detail. In July 2012, she made the move into our Laundry Department. So, essentially she is to thank for all of those crisp clean towels and linens that are provided for guests to use throughout their stay. Dawn resides in Mountain Lake Park with her husband. In her spare time (of which she says there is very little of) she enjoys crocheting and getting inked (she is a fan of the tattoos and wears them well). Due to our many various company cook offs, I also know that she is a very talented chef as well. Dawn also has a daughter, Amy, of whom she is immensely proud. Amy is following her mother’s footsteps and is following her dream to become a registered nurse. (Dawn was a nurse for many, many years and glows when she speaks of Amy pursing this passion). So, this month we give a big shout out to Dawn. We are so lucky to have you as part of our team!

I decided to take advantage of the spectacular Fall weather the other day by shopping and wandering through downtown Oakland. While there, I decided to pop into the Garrett County Museum since I had never been there before. What a treat! The outside of the back of the building is reconstructed to look like the old Deer Park Hotel, which was a widely popular hotel constructed in the late 1890’s. One can truly get a sense of how beautiful this hotel was back in its day.
Walking through, you obviously get a real understanding of the history of our area but what I found most fascinating was that the majority of pictures and artifacts were actually donated by the citizens of Garrett County. In one room, you can look at a model of the old B & O Railroad along with some of the original uniforms, pictures, and plaques that were in placed in the station. Interesting fact; Garrett County was actually named in honor of Mr. John W. Garrett, President of the B & O Railroad.
Other items of interest is the room that is reconstructed to look like an old Deep Creek Lake cottage and a room devoted to some of the military background of our area. As an resident of Mountain Lake Park, I was awed by the pictures of the old lake, which at the time was a popular place for those to vacation. Unfortunately it could not be salvaged and was torn down but many years ago, Mtn. Lake housed a 5000 seating Bashford Amphitheater, which William Howard Taft actually spoke at in August 1911. To see the pictures, one cannot help but be amazed at the enormity of the building and to imagine what huge crowds it must have drawn to it.
I highly recommend that you take a day and visit the museum. Make a full day of it and also visit the Transportation Museum located just down the road. Don’t forget that Farmer’s Market is still going strong throughout the month of October so visit on Wednesday and Saturday and choose from a large variety of fresh fruit, veggies, and baked goods. Stop into Dottie’s Fountain and Grill for a delicious homemade milkshake. An eclectic atmosphere combined with awesome diner food! You can’t go wrong!

Here we are bursting into the month of May! Who doesn’t love the month of May? It’s that time of the year where the outdoors explode with life, the month that children eagerly start crossing off days on the calendar while anxiously waiting for the last day of school. The month where you can begin to daydream of hot summer days spent swimming in the lake, barbeques, and basically all things summer! Now is a great time to come visit our mountains as the leaves are turning lush and green, docks are going in and we are running some fabulous spring specials. Not sure what to do while you’re in the area? With several state parks to choose from, now is a spectacular time for hiking and mountain biking. Now, yes, I am a big fan of Swallow Falls State Park. It’s hard to go wrong with the sheer beauty of the falls and walking trails, so this time I decided to go a different route and so the family and I headed down to New Germany State Park, located outside of Grantsville, and approximately 30 minutes from McHenry. With over 10 miles of walking trails, you may find yourself wandering through a dense hemlock forest, colorful mixed hardwoods, rhododendron-filled stream valleys or towering pines and spruces. Hiking, trail-running and biking are the most popular activities throughout the year. Whether walking along the lake or wetland, or hiking the scenic trails, visitors are sure to have an opportunity to view birds and wildlife. Abundant bird species can be found throughout the area, such as pileated woodpeckers, black-capped chickadees, barred owls, great blue herons and an occasional osprey. In the late spring and summer, guests of the park can purchase snacks from the snack bar or rent a kayak or paddle boat to roam around the l3 acre lake. Swimming is also popular in the designated beach area. This Friday, May 4, there will be a “Live Jam” held at the Lake House. This is an awesome opportunity for musicians and spectators alike to join together to play and enjoy traditional folk, bluegrass, and any “old-time” Appalachian style music! Again this will be held in the Lake House from 6:30-9:30 and the admission is free! Check it out! Mother’s Day is just around the corner so now is the perfect time to treat mom to a weekend getaway. Call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations today to begin finding your perfect vacation home. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!
Last night the Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations’ reservation staff toured Dream Mountain Ranch in Bruceton Mills, WV. It is about 20 minutes west of Deep Creek Lake. It is a 1100 acre gaming ranch and definitely wild and wonderful, with over 500 whitetail deer, 60 elk, and 20 buffalo. We even got to see some white bucks that were just brought to the ranch. There are 5 catch and release ponds and 52 miles of trails for hiking and ATV riding.
They have a 4 bedroom lodge and 3 one bedroom cabins all luxuriously decorated. The Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations group then had their meeting in the lodge with some good ole fashion sloppy joes!
Look for more information on the Ranch shortly!
