Vacationing @ Deep Creek Lake~ Local Style PART 1

Loving Lake Life!

With some extra time off this past week, my family and I decided that we wanted to “take advantage of our natural resources” and experience a mini-vacation here at home (aka Deep Creek Lake). Our first evening, we decided to take it easy and just enjoy dinner and a movie. We chose to eat at Uno’s Chicago Grill as it is one of our favorite lakefront dining options (come by boat or car!). There is something relaxing about dining out of the deck as you watch everyone playing on the lawn and in the lake. After a fabulous meal, we headed over to Garrett 8 Cinemas. While I can’t say too much for the actual movie we watched, we did embrace the comfort of the AC. The next day, it was time for some adventure. The boys and I packed our lunch and headed to the lake to spend some fun time in the water! Cannonballs, competitive dining, floating lazily on our rafts, I didn’t think I could ever convince my crew to leave. We did have a wonderful afternoon though. The lake can be so refreshing! Our next stop was to swing by the Lakeside Creamery for some ice cream cones! Made on the premises with all fresh ingredients, it is clearly easy to see why this is favorite destination of visitors and locals! Yum! Exhausted but content we left and headed home. Our shenanigans continued throughout the next few days where we attempted to cram as much fun as possible into our time off. Look for Part II where you will find out who conquered mini-golf, who tried to cheat @ mini-golf, and how we took some breathtaking pictures of the McHenry Cove as we rode the scenic chairlift at Wisp Resort.

Fun times at Art in the Park!

Kids enjoying a demonstration!

Summer season is in full swing here in the mountains.  If you happen to be in the area this weekend, I suggest you head over to Deep Creek State Park and check out the annual “Art in the Park” that is being held there this weekend. Guests can wander around the grounds to the various tents and tables to check out the work of some of our local artists. The kids may enjoy some of the various nature programs that are going on throughout the day. Silent auctions and craft demonstrations will also be enjoyed throughout the weekend. Among the various arts available, you will find jewelry, woodwork, fused glass, paintings, furniture, baskets and more. Guests can arrive by foot, car, or boat (there is a small service fee for entrance into the park). Afterwards, take the kids down to the sandy beach area and let them swim and splash around in the water. The beach area boasts a mile of sandy beach and is roped off in the water. Various picnic tables are placed around the beach area making this a perfect spot for a picnic lunch. Art in the Park is definitely a family friendly event that you should consider checking out!

What to do “Fore!” dad?

It appears that April showers do, in fact, bring May flowers. The mountain top is in full bloom right now and boasting a variety of brilliant greens, anticipating a much desired summer season. In the meantime, the temperature has been perfect and now is the ideal time to plan a nice weekend getaway. What would one do? Why, golf, of course! Although there are many various golf courses in Garrett County, 2 of the most easily accessible here at lake are Wisp Golf Course and Lodestone Golf Course.
The boys taking advantage of the weather to play @ Wisp!

Wisp Golf Course has been named by Golfstyles Magazine as one of “100 Must-Play Courses of the Mid-Atlantic.” Taking advantage of the base of the ski slopes, this course is designed using their natural contours. Mix in spectacular mountain views, this 72 par championship course will provide excitement and challenges for all players. http://www.wispresort.com/wisp/info/s.golf.aspx

Lodestone Golf Course, a new course to our area, is located on a mountain ridge on top of Wisp Mountain. This course is a Hale Irwin Signature design in collaboration with golf architect Todd Schoeder. What exactly does this mean? I was curious. It seems that Hale Irwin is an American professional golfer and one of the few in history to win 3 U.S. Opens. He later developed a career as a golf course architect, designing some of the most prestigious and challenging courses to date.
Morning fishing!

With Father’s Day quickly approaching next month, now is the perfect time to plan dad’s golfing weekend getaway! We have many amazing homes that are just minutes away from both courses. Call us here Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119 or go online www.deepcreekvacations.com) and let us know what you are looking for and we will do our best to find the perfect vacation home for you. Make it a couple’s getaway and we can recommend some fantastic massage and spa options for the women in the group. Summer is just around the corner so now is the time to begin planning that unforgettable family vacation. We can’t wait to see you at the lake!

A Bucket of Fun!!

Last week we were blessed with a family gathering of my father-in-law and nephews. Bright sunny days and warm temperatures made our decision to spend several days cooling off by swimming in the lake an easy one. Now, where would one go to entertain 4 extra- rambunctious little boys? Easy! Deep Creek State Park, of course. With over a mile of shoreline surrounding the park, guests can swim, fish, or launch their boat. Offering a host of amenities such as picnic tables, charcoal grills, pavilions, and bathroom facilities make the park a great place to spend the entire day. The beach area is sandy with a small pebble bottom, perfect for swimming. They also have a volleyball/ basketball court and some playground equipment that the boys loved playing on.

The park also offers some amazing hiking trails that range from modern too difficult. Pets are permitted on the trails as long as they are on a leash. Guests can pick up a trail guide at the Park Headquarters or purchase one online. Accessible all four seasons, the trails are often used for cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and mountain bike riding.

Interesting fact about the park is that it is also the site of the historic Brant coal mine and homesite, where a restored mine entrance preserves a typical drift or adit mine. The mine was worked for several years by the Brant family and supplied bituminous coal for heating and blacksmithing in the local community. The mine was started as a dream by two local pioneers, Delphia White & George Beckman. It was in the early 1920’s when Deep Creek Lake was still in its planning stages. Delphia purchased 40 acres of land which he believed to be perfect for mining. In 1925, the dam was plugged and the terrain changed drastically. Unfortunately, by 1926, the mining had taken its toll on both men and they fell ill and passed away due to chronic lung disease. Their legend still lives on, however, as visitors, hikers, and history lovers can visit “Old Brant Mine” and learn more details of the history of the mine.

Pack up the cooler, gather the kids, and head to the state park for full day of fun activities. (Our boys had so much fun that they crashed out quite early, an added bonus for the adults!) We are still offering some fantastic last minute deals on our vacation rentals, so call Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations (1-866-351-1119) or go online (www.deepcreekvacations.com) to view all of our homes. Mountain memories are waiting to be made and we can’t wait to see you @ the lake!
