Garrett County Fair

It has been a great week for the Garrett County Fair. There is something about BBQ chicken, home made lemonade, and funnel cake that makes you feel good inside. Last night Brody and I enjoyed an evening at the Garrett County Fair with family and friends. We started out on the Gator for Chase and Ady and then moved onto the games. After they suckered me out of more money than I wanted to spend, we moved on to the food. I picked up some BBQ Chicken from the Lions Club (awesome!!) and Brody loved the roll, Chad grabed a turkey leg from Archie’s (our favorite) and Laurel grabbed some french fries from the Rotrary. Chad, Chase, and I hit the Ferris wheel, what a view from the top! I hope everyone gets their fill of the fair, Saturday is the last day!

Helmuth Heise

We are sad to let our fans know that Helmuth (Ace) Heise, founder of Wisp Resort, has passed. He and his wife, Eveyln, bought Will O’ Wisp hotel and restaurant in 1952. Then in 1953, they built a 10 unit motel. In 1955 they established Marsh Mountain Ski Area, which changed its name to Wisp in 1957. In 2001, Heise sold his financial interested in the Wisp Resort.

We will honor his memory, and express our greatest sympathies towards the family.

Employee Night Boat Night Out

Check out the sky!

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations celebrated mid summer on a pontoon ride from one tip to the other of Deep Creek Lake. All departments came along (though some could not make it), and we even had an employee from our web hosting company join as well! Everyone brought something to snack on and to share. I even put together a team building game for the evening. The winning team was Chad, Chris, Chris, and Billi Jean. Fun was had by all!!

Day on the Lake

Yesterday was a cooler day at Deep Creek Lake, but that did not keep us from on weekly boat trip. Joe, Brody, and I enjoyed a fun day on our pontoon boat that we bought from Deep Creek Marina. It was about 70 degrees with big white puffy clouds (we did have to dodge a few rain clouds though). We met up with Joe’s sister Angie, and her daughter, Kambrie at Uno’s for lunch on the deck. The wings were great and Kambrie loved the Caesar wrap (she likes to dip it in hot sauce)! We then took Brody to the play area with the whale and the ship. But his favorite activity was feeding the ducks. The rest of the day we just cruised around the lake until the clouds looked too dark for comfort. If you have not gotten a chance to cruise the waters in Deep Creek, now is the perfect time (midweek is a little slower on the water).

Oriole’s Game in Baltimore

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations’ owners were able to get out of town and enjoy an O’s game in Baltimore last week. Thank you Lisa and Chris for manning the phones!!
We started our night at Pickle’s Pub, to get their fried pickles, of course. Then headed off to the O’s game to watch the Orioles play the Seattle Mariners. We had dinner in the Camden Club and watched most of the game from up there. We also ran into old friends from Baltimore as well!! The following morning we headed off to the Inner Harbor to do some shopping before heading back to Deep Creek Lake. It has been too long since I have been to the Inner Harbor, we did not want to leave. We are already planning our next trip to Baltimore with all of the kids!

Hen House

Joe and I had a wonderful dinner last night at The Hen House Restaurant, located in Grantsville Md. We enjoyed oysters in the half shell and a dozen large crabs! I had not been to the Hen House since they rebuilt a couple of years ago, and the new building is gorgeous with a large floor to ceiling stone fireplace and cathedral ceilings (sorry about the picture it was closer to dark). It was only a short drive from Deep Creek Lake, you can get there by Route 68 east or take Route 40 East (more scenic). Below is some information about The Hen House from their website.

The Hen House Restaurant began more than four decades ago in Frostburg, Maryland. In 1961, Buck and Ginny Warn started the restaurant by building a cement addition on the side of their house on Bowery Street, which accommodated only nine guests. The restaurant’s featured selection at the time, chicken, became the namesake of their business.

Sons, Gary and Bill Warn, were busy helping their parents at the restaurant, doing whatever chores were necessary and by 1975 the brothers had purchased the business from their parents. Through hard work, the number of customers continued to increase. A decision was made in 1979 to look for a new location so growth could continue. The Warns moved to their present location along U.S. Route 40, which was previously the Colonial Inn, built in 1929. The family business continues to thrive in its Old National Pike location, commonly referred to as Long Stretch, in Garrett County.
An unusual aspect of the Hen House is its poultry name, but quality seafood reputation. While chicken was the featured item during the 1960´s, the Warn brothers expanded the menu to include fresh seafood. The Hen House, with seating for over 400, is now the largest seafood restaurant west of Frederick.
Live crabs are delivered daily; fish, scallops, shrimp, clams, lobster, crab legs, and soft shell crabs are offered for seafood lovers. A large charcoal pit provides for tasty barbecue ribs. Even steak lovers are not neglected as their favorites are cooked to order. And yes, fried chicken is still on the menu.
