Hen House

Joe and I had a wonderful dinner last night at The Hen House Restaurant, located in Grantsville Md. We enjoyed oysters in the half shell and a dozen large crabs! I had not been to the Hen House since they rebuilt a couple of years ago, and the new building is gorgeous with a large floor to ceiling stone fireplace and cathedral ceilings (sorry about the picture it was closer to dark). It was only a short drive from Deep Creek Lake, you can get there by Route 68 east or take Route 40 East (more scenic). Below is some information about The Hen House from their website.

The Hen House Restaurant began more than four decades ago in Frostburg, Maryland. In 1961, Buck and Ginny Warn started the restaurant by building a cement addition on the side of their house on Bowery Street, which accommodated only nine guests. The restaurant’s featured selection at the time, chicken, became the namesake of their business.

Sons, Gary and Bill Warn, were busy helping their parents at the restaurant, doing whatever chores were necessary and by 1975 the brothers had purchased the business from their parents. Through hard work, the number of customers continued to increase. A decision was made in 1979 to look for a new location so growth could continue. The Warns moved to their present location along U.S. Route 40, which was previously the Colonial Inn, built in 1929. The family business continues to thrive in its Old National Pike location, commonly referred to as Long Stretch, in Garrett County.
An unusual aspect of the Hen House is its poultry name, but quality seafood reputation. While chicken was the featured item during the 1960´s, the Warn brothers expanded the menu to include fresh seafood. The Hen House, with seating for over 400, is now the largest seafood restaurant west of Frederick.
Live crabs are delivered daily; fish, scallops, shrimp, clams, lobster, crab legs, and soft shell crabs are offered for seafood lovers. A large charcoal pit provides for tasty barbecue ribs. Even steak lovers are not neglected as their favorites are cooked to order. And yes, fried chicken is still on the menu.

Memorial Day at the Honi Honi

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations kicked off summer officially at the annual Memorial Day celebration at the Honi Honi yesterday! The rain stayed at bay during our celebration, and it was in the 70s all day. We spent the day in the lawn with family and friends, listened to Queen City Funk & Soul, and drank fruity drinks. We ran into lots of friends Bill Ingram (General Manager of Uno’s), Kate & Fred Collins (owners of JG’s Pub), Smiley and Kathy Kessler (owners of Pine Lodge Steakhouse, Smiley’s, DC Sweets and Tourist Trap), and many, many others. It was a perfect ending to a great weekend!

PAWS Night

Billy Weisgerber and Jodi Refosco guest bartended at JG’s Pub two weeks ago to raise money for Garrett County PAWS. Which helps with the spading and neutering of animals and rescue and adoptions as well. From 6-9 pm Billy and Jodi bartended and waited on tables, while Joe Refosco worked the silent auction and Chad Taylor sold the 50/50s. Kate and Fred Collins from JG’s, were cooking the food and helping with the tables. We have not finished collecting all of the monies, and we will let you know of the findings. We had a great success and a fun evening. Thank you to all that came out and supported us!

Top 10 Best Boating Lakes

Destinations for Lesiure has published Deep Creek Lake, MD as one of the top 10 boating lakes.

When it comes to boating there are plenty of lakes that allow you to have fun. However, there are few lakes that are the best for boating and you should take advantage of the fun these lakes have to offer.

Deep Creek Lake – Maryland
The largest inland body of water found in Maryland is Deep Creek Lake. It is a man-made lake that has a variety of freshwater fish for the fishing enthusiast. While fishing has been the most popular draw for the lake it is also expanding into a recreational boating community during the summer. Some of the fish species found in the lake include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, black crappie, walleye, yellow perch, rock bass, bluegill, common carp and northern pike.

Pasta Mania at Four Seasons,Will ‘O the Wisp

We went to Will ‘O the Wisp for dinner at Four Seasons Restaurant last night. If you have not gone to pasta night here, you are missing out!

The new lounge area is something to see. We started with cocktails and talked with the Will O’ crew (Rhonda, Dawn, and Wendy). We then were seated in the dining area overlooking the lake and ordered a salad or soup (French Onion Soup was great!). Then we got in line at the pasta stations. You get to choose the meat you would like, vegetables, a style of sauce (they have over 30), as well as the type of pasta (I went with whole wheat). I got a suggestion from their head chef, Jason Fickes, for the spicy tequila pink sauce. It was delightful!

All of this for only $14.95 each. The Taylor-Made DCV (Jodi, Joe, Chad, and Lisa)crew enjoyed a wonderful night at Pasta Mania. The food was great and the service was fantastic. For a party of four we paid only $80 with drinks and tip!

Below is information from their website:

Imagine standing beside a chef who is preparing your meal with a three-foot high column of flame! It is called flambé, and is part of the finishing process for preparation of certain types of sauces. On Wednesday nights at the Four Seasons Restaurant, you can treat yourself to a wonderful and unusual pasta dinner. Directly overlooking Deep Creek Lake, the Four Seasons is a beautiful room with a gracious atmosphere, with linen tablecloths, fresh flowers, candlelight and on Wednesday nights.
