The Book Mark’et and Antique Mezzanine

Yesterday I spent my afternoon in downtown Oakland. My little guy’s birthday is in two weeks, and we had our eyes set on a fabulous book at The Book Mark’et. Not only am I an avid reader, and love the selection they have to offer for adult reading, their kid section is incredible!

They have everything from fun, filled story books, to stuff animals, classic wooden toys, to even puppets. My son enjoyed browsing all of the toys and checking out his favorite trucks and Choo Choo trains in the wide selection of books.

There is even a great section for antiques with great finds and must haves!

This is a must see during your travels in Deep Creek Lake, located at 11 South Second Street Oakland. Downtown Oakland is only a ten minute drive from Deep Creek Lake, with fabulous shops and boutiques, a gallery, diners, and a great train station.

Fabulous Dinner at Will O’the Wisp

Joe and I went out with some friends last night for a great dinner on the lake at Will O’the Wisp. We enjoyed before dinner cocktails in the new lounge area, where Terah made us some signature drinks. We then proceeded to dinner where we had the pan fried mozzarella wheels (fantastic choice). I choose the shrimp tempura dinner with a chili-garlic sauce and decided to try the french onion soup. Now, I have to admit, I have tryed my share of french onion soup, and believed before last night, that Uno’s had cornered the market on this soup. However, the herbs and broth mixed with fresh croutons and cheese made this french onion my number one choice anywhere!!

Too stuffed to even think about desert, we decided to take ours to go. Definitely, just as the good the next day!

Our waiter, Trevor, was fabulous and met all of our needs, and was great in customer service. Jason Fickes, the chef, even came out to say hi.

This was a great dinner with amazing atmosphere, and a must stop your next time into town!

Winterfest 2010

Winterfest 2010 was this past weekend in downtown Oakland. The weather was perfect with the sun shining (no snowfall) and about the high 20’s. Joe, Brody, and I started the day at the snowmobile races across from the Armory. We ran into Andrea Miller, our new Events Coordinator, Jay Savage and family, and the Lohrs.

We then went over to the festival and walked around town. The kids enjoyed the ice slide, throne, and bowling alley. There were fabulous ice sculptors to view (Brody likes the Choo Choo the best!). Saw some snowmen, and checked out the wine tasting in the Book Market. If you have not been in the Book Market lately – it is a must stop! I will be going back to pick out a Truck Book for Brody’s birthday. We ran into Angie Landers, from our Reservation department, and family.

Great times were had by all! Thank you Oakland.

To finish off our afternoon we ended up at the Honi Honi for some appetizers and hot cocoa.

Snow Storm 2010

Deep Creek Lake received over 36 inches of snow this past weekend. It snowed all Friday and through the night until Saturday around 2pm. 219 was a one lane highway in the morning on Saturday, and most of us locals were pushing snow through the back roads, since they were not touched until later in the morning yesterday by the county roads. You could easily find 7 foot snow drifts in areas from the high winds on Friday night.

Below is a picture from one of our guests that stayed at On Eagle’s Wings, on top of the mountain. This guest is 6’3″ – that is one big drift!
Thank you to Mariel Schenk and family for the picture, these are friends and family of Western Trails Riding Stables. Also special thanks to Gen Schenk for bringing the tractor up to our house on Friday evening to get everyone out!

Ice Skating and Sushi at Wisp

Last night Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations took the staff ice skating at Wisp. For only $16/person you get a 90 minute session of ice skating. We all had a lot of fun watching each other remember how to ice skate, it brought back many fond, and sore, memories! We enjoyed a bonfire and some warm cocoa!

Afterwards we headed over to Wispers for some music and sushi. Wednesday nights that have sushi night at Wisp – it was fabulous. We had great service and saw a lot of friends.

Thanks again to our wonderful staff that make it all worth while!

Thanks also to John McCracken and Rex from Wisp for making our night that much more special!

Swallow Falls in the Winter

After receiving over 87″ of snow so far this year and being too busy to get outside to actually enjoy it, I decided to venture out yesterday. I took the family to a snowy and quite beautiful destination. One that we all love to hike in the summer but seem to forget about it in the winter, Swallow Falls State Park.

One thing I never really noticed until yesterday, is that they have a handicap parking spot further down on the walkway to the Falls and a ramp that leads to the overlook – so everyone can enjoy the awe inspiring rush of the waterfall!

Muddy Creek was not completely frozen, but still magnificent in its splendor. The pathways were all plowed making the walk easy and my son had a blast in the snow on the way down.

If you have not made it out there yet – Swallow Fall State Park in the winter is a must see!

Holidays in Deep Creek Lake

The snow was flying in Deep Creek Lake for the holidays. Christmas was spectacular with the snow and the lights, and down town Oakland was all in its splendor! We received over a foot of snow over the last week and the slopes were in high gear. I have heard raves about the new ice skating ring and the tubing hill is tremendous fun. Wisp is having all kinds of mid week specials on skiing, so call now to make a ski trip mid week and save big on your accommodations at one of our vacation homes and lift tickets at Wisp!

Winter Wonderland

Our winter has finally began! Deep Creek Lake received over 25 inches this past weekend of heavy, beautiful snow. Saturday was a perfect day for sleigh riding and snowball fights. The evergreens were all hanging low with the heavy snow – what a beautiful sight!
The ski slopes are open with 16 trails and the tubing park opened this past weekend. Snow is in the forcast for the next couple of days – so it looks like Deep Creek Lake will be having a White Christmas.

Snowy Weather

We received about 6 inches yesterday of heavy snow – absolutely stunning laying on our evergreens. The Wisp is blowing away and gunning to open this coming weekend. The rainy weather did delay the opening. They are in hopes to open for their Birthday Weekend. Also if you have not heard, Wisp will have an ice skating ring this year! Look to see you soon on the slopes.
